More than PowerMac Updates in Aug?

Posted:
in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
OK, so we can all agree that Apple is going to update the PowerMac line in Aug, both Think Secret, MOSR, and the Laws of Consumer Patience demand the release of an updated PowerMac line.

The main point of Contention now is what date. Think Secret Insists on the 13th, to co-incide with the ending of Apple's current promotion on the G4s. MOSR Insists on the 24th to co-incide with the release of Jaguar.

But what are the chances of something else being released? Powerbooks are due for an update, the old egg-style iMac is due to be eighty-sixed, and its been awhile since apple did anything to sweeten the deal on an Apple Flat Panel.

My prediction:

Blazing Fast G4s or (maybe G5s - but i'm not banking on it)

Powerbooks at 933Mhz, low end at 800

$100 off the price of current LCDs offered by apple across the board.

Steve jobs may cry. (top of my wish list)

What are your predictions?

Aug 24. That's when Jagwire is shipping and you might as well announce new HW and SW on the same date.

Aug 13th is chosen because that's the end of Apples Powermac rebates or whateva.

I would be willing to bet that new hardware anouncements are eminent....but not all of them will be in August.

    1. A speed increase across the board should be comming based on Apples typical time line.

2 Bluetooth needs to be integrated once 10.2 is out.

    3. Shake requires a 3-button mouse (Pro mouse+)

4.New video systems from ATI, just anounced, and Nvidia should be released by the end of August

What type of anouncements/events will bring about these changes is the question. I would hope that Apple has a PRO anouncement for the Power Macs at the end of August...adding in a "one more thing..." minor speed increase for the iMac/eMac. Then anounce new PowerBook/iBook's in September. A new X-Serve in October, though depending on the type of upgrade to the PowerMac it might be wise to move this one up to September as well.

How about announced on the 13th, shipping on the 24th.

If they wait until the 24th to announce people have to wait longer until they can actually get the machines. Why not have both shipping on the same day?

How are PowerBooks "due" for an update? They were updated April 29.

Generally don't engage in rumour mongering, but how about this:

    Updated G4s on the 13th.

New workstation class G5s on the 24th.

 needs to appease the new Shake customers and others doing high end 3D work.

I doubt we will see anything on the 24th.

Its a Saturday, they would miss out on any Wall Street reaction and no one but MacHeads would pay attention.

I think 8/24/02 will be like 3/24/01. OSX 10.2 will just become available.

There has to be some kind of synergy between 10.2 and the new towers. Why would Apple start filling the channel with computers loaded with 10.1, and then start loading them with 10.2 only ten days later? If they announce on the 13th, they will start shipping on the 24th or thereabouts.

I suppose there's a chance they could release 10.2 for the towers a bit sooner since they could much more effectively debug for a specific piece of hardware. But I don't think they've ever done anything like that before.

I seem to remember that one of the iMacs or iBooks had a "pre-release" os on it around the time of 9.1-9.2, shortly before the full release came out. I am pretty sure that there were earlier product specific OS's for other new computers as well.

Examine the dates. The 24th is on a Saturday. Probably no release on that day. The 13th is on a Tuesday, the same day of the week that they released the Xserve and others on other Tuesdays (I cannot recall exactly what the other announcements were, but all on Tuesdays). Anyway, my bet is on the 13th.

computers will ship with 10.2 on aug 13th along with the new powermacs but individual copies of jagwire for everyone else wont be avalable untill the 24th.

their is a rebate right now for the LCD's. $500 off if you buy a mac. why would they discontinue the deal on the 12th just to pick it up again. No their will not be a deal on flat panals after the 12th untill next year.

Apple has ALWAYS upped their hardware specs to coincide with the end of their current special. why would it be different this time?

Just cause Jagwire wont be sold on retail shelves till the 24th doesnt mean they cant start shipping systems with it before the 24th.

Most ppl agree that Nvidia will not have the NV30 untill late this year, possibly even early next year because of Setbacks and Delays in being able to impliment the new .13 micron process.

Laptops are always upgraded in the spring, and powermacs/imacs in the summer. Laptops just went up in speed earlier this year. dont expect it to happen again.

This is what will happen. You will get an INCRAMENTAL UPGRADE to the speed of the powermac and the Imac. you'll most definatly get DDR on the powermac, mabey an option for a high end Imac. mabey usb2/firewire2, mabey not. and you will not be getting bluetooth incorperated. not yet.

Like Waterman mentioned.....with 3rd party G4 CPU upgrades soon to reach 1gig, Apple should announce all consumer Hware will be G4 based (imac, pwrbook @ 1 gig & beyond) and on the 24th will intro the new PwrMac line sporting a new processor altogether.

Yes, but harrassing rumor sites can be done with cheap, relatively unskilled labor... much like posting to one.

Apple...Think Different. Also, i think if apple wanted to continue to push their switch promo, they need to beef up the processors, even though what they have are great as it is. The problem is, pc users are used to hearing huge numbers on the new pentium 4 chips or amd chips and than when they go and look at a mac and see that one of the high end machines that they are selling is running a 1ghz g4, they think that the computer is slow because of the processor, and most people don't realize that when a new computer is realesed by apple more than just the processor is upgraded

This is exactly what I was thinking. Make the announcement on a Tuesday, ship them the same day as Jaguar. Makes perfect sense to me.

Of course, there's always the possibility that the rumor sites are full of sh*t and we won't actually see anything until early September.

I don't expect any new Hardware lines, but it's always possible.

    From Macnn:

[quote] Apple details Mac OS X Up-To-Date program

Apple's Mac OS X Up-To-Date program Web site includes details of the $20 Mac OS X 10.2 upgrade offer announced last week at Macworld Expo New York. Qualifying computers include any Macintosh sold by an authorized Apple reseller on or after July 17, 2002, without Mac OS X 10.2. The $130 (SRP) Mac OS X "Jaguar" (10.2) update will ship on August 24th. The Up-To-Date offer expires October 31, by which point Apple is expected to ship the OS with new Macs

Note the last line. Implies that new Macs won't be shipping with 10.2 until some time later then August 24th. Didn't they take awhile to ship computers with OS 10.0 installed even while it was available boxed? If this is true then the release of new Powermacs my not be tied to the release of Jaguar.

i dont think ppl that switch even look at the numbers anymore. their just tired of windows and bill gates and they just want a PC that runs and doesnt crash, and is easy to check their email.

What. Like they picked up the deal this time after previously running it .

Remember also that if this was such a big deal that the offer ends on the 13th August then it only applies in the US. because the 'Crystal Clear Saving' offer is only available in the US and not in the UK, Europe or anywhere else in the world for that matter.

It obviously will not be on the 24th August as people have already pointed out it is a Saturday.

MacBoudeille have a rumoured date of the 5th August. Personally I suspect earleir rather than later for the announcement with shipping later in the month.

Also I am surprised no one predicts a revamped LCD line. Wouldn't a widescreen 17 inch ASD make a lot of sense now with the iMac on 17 inch WS? There is a nice slot for a 19 inch model too and the cases are long in the tooth now although I would expect a similar re-working of the existing design much as the new G4 el cap has been re-modelled not completely changed.

After all the Crystal Clear offer clears as many 17 inch ASD as it does G4's

Worth mentioning you can't buy a 15" LCD from Apple Australia at the moment. They start at 17".
