Aug 24. That's when Jagwire is shipping and you might as well announce new HW and SW on the same date.

No. If you have two separate announcements, then you get two seperate bits of PR, and you get much more coverage overall. I think Apple will announce new hardware early in the month, which ships with 10.2. That will be a fairly big announcement. Then the real release of 10.2 later in the month for another PR blitz.
How long would it take to cobble together a special event?
How far in advance would invitations have to be sent out to the press? Surely Aug 5 is too soon to have this kind of release?
If there is a special event, then upgrades would be good, but so far Apple hasn't mentioned anything. I just hope we don't have to cope with another press release championing a 1.2 Ghz PowerMac with the same motherboard.
Worth mentioning you can't buy a 15" LCD from Apple Australia at the moment. They start at 17".

Hmmm... That is kind of strange, do you know how long it's been that way? I don't see any reason for them not to have the 15", it seems that if it was going to be discontinued they wouldn't remove it until an announcement which (I hope) will include 19" LCDs.
I believe that a 15" 17" 19" 23" lineup would be great, I hope that they keep the 15" so there is always an affordable option.
Edit: With this post, I reach the arbitrary point at which I am given the title "Member," Woo hoo!
Note the last line. Implies that new Macs won't be shipping with 10.2 until some time later then August 24th. Didn't they take awhile to ship computers with OS 10.0 installed even while it was available boxed? If this is true then the release of new Powermacs my not be tied to the release of Jaguar.

I think it just means that by October 31 Apple expects that all Macs produced before August 24 are sold and that all Macs sold at resellers will have Jaguar on them.

I only just noticed now you also can't get it as BTO either.
I never actually asked what the reason is but it's odd to say the least. It is possible that Apple Australia decided to stop carrying it.
Samsung has said it expects its next generation 17" screens to cost roughly the same as current 15" screens though. They shouldn't be too far away.
Congratulations on reaching member status too
Edit: Something else for you. The removal of the 15" LCD from Australia's Apple store is really sloppy. Unlike normal where there just isn't an option in this case the option isn't removed so much as just sort of blank (go look). Anyway if you select it it causes an error.
Philosophy: Apple will not release everything at once. My bet is they will want to seek the maximum spread and maximum exposure. If you look at the period around when the recent PowerBooks were updated...there was a major announcement seemingly every week up to the updated iBooks. I think I can deduce from this recent Apple stragegy, that if they decide to release new or updated products, they're going to spread out the news so it keeps Apple buoyed in the headlines. Example: Week One, updated PowerMacs; Week Two, OS X Jaguar; etc...
I am expecting them to announce the new computers sometimes in between the 13th and the 24th d'August....and then say they will be shipping around late summer, preloaded will Jaguar and Bluetooth....
This will be good, it will make it so if people want to buy an old PowerMac, they can knowign what they will get into at lower prices...

How are PowerBooks "due" for an update? They were updated April 29.

They are due for an update because faster G4 chips are now available, and we want them in our laptops!
Apple's Mac OS X Up-To-Date program Web site includes details of the $20 Mac OS X 10.2 upgrade offer announced last week at Macworld Expo New York. Yes, but in the same respect the middle line could imply that their might be computers shipped before Aug 24 with Jaguar. Its been done before.

True, this up-to-date program will cover models that did not ship from the factory with 10.2, but have already been shiped to resellers. When the new PM's are released there will probably be a rush on the 800 mhz PM's just as there was at the beginning of the year on the 733's.
How long would it take to cobble together a special event?

Didn't Apple do the same thing with the iPod? I believe that was rather short notice, wasn't it?

It is worth mentioning that the 15in LCD screen came out a huge 2 years ago (I think), and has been unchanged. the smart money is on a new dispaly tom atch the new towers... that's what I think anyway. Anyone want to agree or maul me for this ?
PowerMacs (possibly) updated on August 7. No inside info, just looking at the recent past, and maybe ... just maybe a little Jedi insight.
Here is the thought process:
New iMac/MWSF, Jan. 7 (Monday)
3 weeks later, to the day
PowerMac Dual-Gig Update, Jan. 28 (Monday)
iMac 17" update, July 17 (Wednesday)
3 Weeks later ... to the day
New Powermac, August 7
Jaguar Release, August 24 (as if we didn't know ...)
The August 13 deal dead-line, as was stated "US Only", shouldn't carry much weight. It's mearly to clear overhead in the cheapest (meaning for Apple) way possible. And the period just after the PowerMac announcement (Aug. 7 - 13), could offer folks additional savings incentives (retailers lowering markups >> even lower prices).
The new Macs should ship either August 24th, or soon after, IMO (giving better than 2 weeks to get things situated for initial orders, new PwrMacs loaded w/Jaguar).
Also on the "wish list": new cinema "wide screen" displays in the 17", 19", 21", and 23" varieties (just not sure what is feasible though, except for 17 and 23); wireless Apple 3 Button mice (bluetooth?); and wireless Apple Pro keyboards (bluetooth?). Concurrent release ... doubtful for the wireless stuff, but would be nice to include in an "Apple Event" dedicated to built-in BlueTooth incorporation across the product line, Huh.
'Forever in motion is the Future, difficult to see it is'
I have been really enjoying reading this thread, most everyone here has had thoughts I hadn't even come close to considering. So far I haven't added any thoughts since my original post, but this talk about LCDs has caught my eye.
If apple changes the look of the Powermac, to either aluminum styling or the white and chrome looks, they'll need to adjust the look of the studio displays to match.
Is it any co-incidence that the current special offer is targeted at both the Displays and the Units? My bet is that if the PowerMacs that are released have a different case design, then we'll see a whole line of new designs for he Displays that match.
OK, first of all, the season we are currently in DOES NOT have anything to do with updated hardware...: [quote] Laptops are always upgraded in the spring, and powermacs/imacs in the summer.

look @ the sig...
Next order of buisness, the PM update... who says they cant announce them before the 24th w/o jaguar? you have any idea the number of orders they would get from people who just want to be able to have Jaguar early? great way to boost sales...
as for other announcements... why not wait for seybold or apple expo paris?
expect a PB/iBook update in december or so... and maybe an iMac rev around them also in time for the x-mas season... and maybe a new iDevice thrown in there for good measure...
Oh yeah and the 15" display is not available @ the retail apple stores either... i think it will stay this way for the time being... why not?

We should see 800 & 1Ghz TiBooks soon, the 7445 seems to be scaling okay.
I wonder if the Ti800 would drop to Ti667 price? That would trigger my upgrade rule nicely!
