More detail of this story posted by a guy in Australia who brought the mag which explains nicely what it said. From the Macnn.com forum:
[quote] I bought the 'zine last Sun & saw the ad, on Mon I submitted the following to a few of the rumour sites but don't think anyone noticed:
-----
Picked up a copy of the August issue of Australian "Design Graphics" magazine yesterday, flicking through I was surprised to see a Designwyse (reseller in Melbourne) ad loudly proclaiming "Apple smashes the Gigahertz barrier. Call us now for details and prices".
It took up the 2 columns where they normally list their G4 specs & prices, which were missing, but all other pricing (iMac, PowerBook etc.) appeared as usual.
I guess this confirms the rumours that a new, faster G4 tower *is* coming in August. Whether it's as leaked on macbidouille.com is anyone's guess.
Why not contact Designwyse & ask them? (+61-3-9706 8858) or email [email protected]... They asked for it!
-----
Designwyse ( www.designwyse.com.au ) usually run a full 2 page ad in Design Graphics
( www.designgraphics.com.au ) each issue. I've been buying this 'zine for years.
No point posting a scan of the ad- it doesn't show anything new, just a generic pic of a G4 side elevation with the aforementioned text.
apple's main development-efforts in hardware over the last three years is leading to the first release of a quantum-based computer running os x 10.2 without compatibility-issues...
rumor has it that the speed of those beasts is worlds ahead of todays machines reaching a peak performance of up to 50 times faster....
Just looked at the mags here too and they're still full of rumors like "new powermacs at MWNY for SURE, like 120% etc, and go on talking about the G4 reaching speeds beyond 2 GHz according to a Motorola insider etc.
I'll believe it when I see it.
G-News
BTW there are questions about more than DP support in jaguar: yes, aparently OS X is based on BSD 4.2 at the moment, while Jaguar will be based on 4.4, thus also have the newer Mach kernel that aparently supports more than 2 CPUs.
However, not before BSD 5.0 gets finished will we see a multithreaded kernel, aparently.
G'day. First up, I was the one who posted this at macnn, and found the magazine etc with it
1. the ad is not made by Apple, but by a reseller
2. the same reseller, from jan to june, had NOTHING in its comments relating to apple hitting/breaking the ghz barrier. They have been selling DP1ghz models since jan (late jan or was it early feb?)
3. This was the July issue, which was *just* released. Funny, the issue right before the possible powermac introduction (as opposed to AFTER it)
4. Call for prices. Hmmm. Wonder what they would say...
5. And maybe the most striking?
They had a tower case picture next to the text (which by the way, was nearly entire page width, third to half page in height - ie big ass print)
What was that picture??
A side shot of the current towers (just showing the handles, apple logo etc)
So what? Well, so far all our (real or fake) shots of the next gen powermac only show changes to the front plate. And sure, a reseller isn't going to have pics of the case, but this makes me think even more that it will be only a faceplate change. For those who wonder about this sort of stuff
If someone has a scanner (I don't), it is
Design Graphics, July 2002 (aussie edition, I believe it also comes out in the US, different publication etc, different ads)
edit: changed "jan-june" to from jan to june, so as not to make it look like they were called that. Dunno the resellers name
1. Even if Apple DOUBLES the clock in the G4 they'll have 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 Ghz models
2. About eight seconds after this has been anounced people will start to complain that Intel has 3.0 Ghz coming in a month or two. (assuming this will happen late August early September)
3. The likelyhood of a doubling is very very low.. <1%.
4. Although clock rate is meaningless, the life of my machine is very important, and with 6 month old Apple machines unable to use 10.2 in full effect (vid card issues I hear), so the old argument that Macs last longer is mute.
I want a new Mac, but the above thoughts I have drive me to online PC configurators more and more for comparison.. and I don't like what I see.

Yup. This is what forced me into the first PC I've ever bought/owned (being delivered Friday). Apple needs to bring the price/performance thing back into some kind of sane perspective. I think that until this is fixed there'll be more of us giving our old Macs to friends/family/eBay and using a PC for a year or two.
I know for me, Apple has been taking me for granted, saving huge ammounts of capital in the bank and refusing to throw extra into R/D of a real pro-sumer system, high-end system or just reducing the ridiculous profit margins on Macs. I want to come back to Mac, but not at any price. That kind of attitude on the part of MacUsers has got us in the position of overpriced hardware and greed moves like .Mac and the Jaguar full-price upgrade. Apple needs a wake-up call, and I think the fact the there are probably more people "switching" to PC for now than coming to Mac should really be getting their attention.
"Yup. This is what forced me into the first PC I've ever bought/owned (being delivered Friday). Apple needs to bring the price/performance thing back into some kind of sane perspective."
Yup. Apple have let it get way out of hand... Yeesh. The last half a year...why didn't Apple go 'all dual' for the 'powerMac' line up? Show some initiative. Bundle extra ram. Put a Ge Ti in as standard. Instead the offers force you to buy pricey warranties and displays to push overpriced and outdated towers.
"I think that until this is fixed there'll be more of us giving our old Macs to friends/family/eBay and using a PC for a year or two."
.... Apple won't go out of business this or next year. But they can't afford to let their tower sales keep eroding like this. If margins are to the bone on their consumer products...where's the money/profit premium going to come from if the 'Pro' base is eroded to a rump?

Wilson, you're my WonderWall.
Listened to the 'yourmaclife' radio show. Funny. A guest on the show was saying the same thing. Worth a listen. Guy from Macjournal was speaking.
Said that Apple haven't sold as many 'power'Macs as they had expected now for five quarters in a row. 5...count 'em, 5!!! And apparently, according to this guy, Apple are saying (publicly) they're not sure what's going wrong.
First of all, they said Os X adoption would boost sales. Then Photoshop would boost flagging 'powers'... NOW(!) it's Quark. Well, if that is true (snigger) then they can expect a few more quarters with declining tower sales. This from a company that used to dish out well over half a million 'power'Mac sales a quarter.
Privately, surely the obvious explains the poor sales. I know cpu problems aren't addressed over night...but some of Apple's decisions haven't helped. Perhaps they ought to have a feedback link on their sight entitled 'Buy us a clue...'
And yeah, the guy on the show mentioned reasons why 'pro' users weren't buying:
DDR, 'Ten' not having features they already got in Mac OS 8.5...and the issue of...well, why buy a 'power'Mac when it isn't significantly faster than what I got already. If what they got can do the job why upgrade? Heck, alot of publishing houses aren't on the latest Quark version...why would they budge for a 200mhz jump with the same memory and bus speed!?
It's not just the 'm' word
Privately, I don't think Apple believe Pro' sales are just down to Ten, Photoshop or Quark.
If Phil Schiller can lecture M$ on 'volume' pricing on Office Ten (via interview on Business Week, heh...)...then Apple need to look at their own stable when it comes to pricing.
Re: volume, price and 'power'Macs. Discuss.
Just kidding. I meant, 'whine'...
If the new 'Towers' feature 1.4 DDR and dual and better bus/controller. That would be a good short term fix. But I'm hoping they'll have something better to follow the 'Hammer to Fall'.
Yerp.

Hey...that's...good. I like that analogy. How...appropriate...

Good lord.. That's like saying G3's can't are unable to use floating point math in full effect because they don't have Altivec. Sheesh... (The word is "moot", by the way, not "mute", and the argument is still perfectly valid. ) I have read so much whining about video card issues and Quartz Extreme, I'm starting to think Apple should've never mentioned it to the public beyond WWDC.
Jag will run just fine whether you have a GF4Ti or an ATI Rage Pro. Newer hardware will always run newer software better and faster than older hardware, that's just a fact of life for which some people feel the need to blame Apple. It's not a phenomenon exclusive to Apple Computer, either.
Sure, I still believe Macs last longer than PCs. I've been running Jag on my Cube at home with no performance problem whatsoever. The Cube is what, 2 year old technology now? There's no way in hell I'd even consider installing, say, Windows 2000 or XP on my circa-1998 sony vaio. No way.
Yes, I have an iBook that I work on. It's not as fast as my PowerMac, but I knew that when I bought it. It's still a great machine and OSX runs great, not to mention it looks spectacular on the 12" display. No, it wont be Quartz Extreme enabled, but it will still be perfectly acceptable, probably faster than 10.1 is now.
As for convincing people to switch who have a lot of $$$ invested in Windows software... Well, if they're heavily invested in Windows software, then it stands to reason that they're not using "6-month old Apple machines", which is what flipped my trigger on this thread to begin with. The thing that got me to switch from Windows to the Mac was simply using a Mac.. over a period of time, it became obvious to me which was the better computing platform. How you can boil that down to a 15-sec tv commercial, well, that's best left to the marketing gurus.

It means they are smashing out of the gigahertz barrier. In other words, the new G5s will have clock speeds in zillohertz!
Logical Me:
