An idea for the next PM...

i have no clue if this would work but it might....

could you have a dual processer but with one G4 chip and one G3 chip??

if you could have the G3 chip run at 1.5GHz and the G4 chip run at 1.0GHz (or what ever)

this way you can use the faster G3 chip to do non altivec stuff, and use the G4 chip for all your altivec needs

----

or what about useing a G3 chip with an altivec chip on the CPU module??

hell i dont know!! whats why im asking you guys!!

G3s don't support multiprocessing. Not a bad idea, though.

I thought the idea of using a G3 was to keep costs down? I don't know how a Power processor would mingle with a G4.. but when you've gotten to that point, why not just add altivec to the Power 4/5 and forget the G4? Power4 is theoretically compatible with PPC...

Ive been thinking the same thing. What if there was one processor (+memory) that was only made for the system. And another processor(s) (+memory) wich were more powerfull, to run the actual applications. This would ofload these processors everyting but their current tasks.

Im no hardware expert but its fun to play with the imagination.

    Performance.

That's an 'idea' for the next 'power'Mac.

    1.5Ghz G3 ??????

If that proc existed then so would a 1.5Ghz G4.

It's a pure Myth that the G3 clocks better than the G4. There might be a small difference as G4's do have Altivec but you'd never see a 400+ mhz dissparity. This is the most common misconception that continues.

Also the price of Proc is determined by yield. I searched the Moto site a couple of months ago and found the current G4's to be somewhat affordable at an avg of roughly $250 per proc. You'd need to halve that price and keep alot of speed to make a G3 worthwile and that's not going to happen.

Also the G3 has an inferior FPU compared to the G4 so you wouldn't want to mix the two procs together if you could.

um, OSX takes advantage of altivec....

    i propose a compromise

    how about a 1.5 ghz G4!!!!!!

Not at all dude. We're all out the loops pretty much on what's REALLY coming so your ideas are just as valid. At any rate I'm excited to see what Apple can do. They have a little cash and momentum...but they still haven't proven that they can improve their Hardware like their software.

Just to add another quick point to this thread, an early poster made the statement that the G3 isn't MP capable. That isn't true. Take a look at the BeBox from Be - it used dual 603s. The 603 was officially not an MP chip, since it lacked features that made MP easy, but those features were replicated by the BeOS.

The G3 was based in part upon the 603, and while it didn't have robust MP features, it was definitely as well off in that regard as the 603, at the very least. Now that doesn't mean it is at all desirable or even feasible to put pair G3 and G4 cores - it almost certainly isn't possible - but I just wanted to point out the G3 could be in MP configs.
