No new G4s from Motorola?

"Within the next few months, Apple will have ditched Motorolla processors for its high end computers. Indeed, after a discussion with Motorolla Canada president Frank Maw on July 25, he quite happily told our sources that product developement has already ceased on non-imbeded PowerPC processors. What does this mean? Quite simply, it means that Motorolla have stopped upgrading the processors we use in our Macs.

Apple have used Motorolla G4 processors for one main reason - AltiVec. However, with processor developement ceasing, it is not known what will happen. Will they use upcoming IBM processors for new PowerMacs and continue using Motorolla for their lower end computers?

Motorolla, of course, will continue to ship current processors if there is a need for them. But Apple wants faster chips, which Motorolla cannot provide.

Apple have been put in a very tough position. Will they be able to get out of this mess without losing sales? We hope so."

First of all, the sources of this rumor are highly questionable.

Secondly, their second article is about future Macs and talks about faster G4s and G5s. If Motorola was really stopping PPC production for use in computers (and had stopped months ago), we would have heard of it from someplace else then iRumors.net.

This is a fairly ridiculous rumor.

    1) Got a link?

    2) Never trust anyone who claims to be a writer but can't run a spellchecker. It's "Motorola".

The wrong thing with that rumor, is that the G4 is an embedded processor. It has been granted of the prize of best embedded chip of the year 2001. So Stopping the G4 means stopping the market of high end embedded chips.

So perhaps if it's refear to the production of a next generation of chip why not, aka the G5, but speaking of the G4 it's ridiculous.

Motorola doesn't really make CPUs for computers anyway, look:

[quote] The MPC7455 host processor is a high-performance, low-power 32-bit implementation of the PowerPC RISC architecture with a full 128-bit implementation of Motorola's AltiVec technology. Delivering a high level of performance with efficient power consumption across virtually all speeds, these innovative processors provide networking and computing product OEMs with a best-in-class solution for a wide range of host processor applications -- including high performance network infrastructure and telecommunications equipment, computing products and embedded systems.

Note the high performance network infrastructure and telecommunications equipment, computing products and embedded systems bit.

Basically all Motorola chips are embedded controllers anyway.
