Pioneer Electronics is aiming to give the recordable DVD and PC markets a boost with a drive for notebooks.

The electronics maker expects to launch a recordable DVD drive for notebook PCs in the fourth quarter, according to Andy Parsons, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Pioneer. The drive will read and re-write DVD discs at 2X speed, record CDs at 16X speed and rewrite CDs at 10X speed.

    Sony already has a VAIO with DVD-R capability. It might be coming to a TiBook near you, but Apple has to keep the prices, they're already to high since they took the bottom-end back up to 2499.

    this is coinciding with <a href="http://www.macrumors.com"; target="_blank">www.macrumors.com</a> reporting superdrive Tibooks are near.

    this could mean something...

    Not on a notebook. The highest end notebook they make, the GRX580, only has a combo drive (dvd-rom/cd-r), not a dvd burner.

    They do have a desktop called the MX that has DVD-R, but that's a desktop.

    They have a big ass desktop replacement NOTEBOOK that needs to be plugged into AC power in order to utilize the DVD-R functionality. I guess there isn't enough juice to supply power for a whole DVD authoring session.

    Check these forums, it's linked here somewhere, but it's Japanese only. It's probably just announced for the Japanese market or something like that. There's a pic of the side, you can clearly see DVD-R on the bay door.

    Yeah, I actually was the one who posted the link to that article weeks ago.

    The DVD-burner is part of the dock, not the laptop itself.

    You are right about the Sony. After digging hard, I found it:

    <a href="http://www.jp.sonystyle.com/Style-a/Catalog/02su/Grx91gp/feat3.html"; target="_blank">http://www.jp.sonystyle.com/Style-a/Catalog/02su/Grx91gp/feat3.html</a>;

    It is not part of the dock though. It is integrated.
