    If this is true, doesn't that show that it will be the 7500 that is debuted? I don't know anything about this kind of stuff, but if it is a different kind of build of chip, it might affect OS 9 compatibility, but if it is just the next revision, shouldn't it still be compatible. Or can Apple just take out compatibility? Just curious.

    Steve Jobs recently replied specifically to a private email that the rumour that OS9 would be locked out of the next gen of machines was "simply not true"

    Reading the requests for a translation made me really embarrassed. As one of those Americans without a 2nd or 3rd language, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate those that understand them and help the rest out. As well, I can understand why so many get frustrated with us ethno-centric americans. Thanks for putting up with us.

    OS compatibility isn't part of the chip design. The chip doesn't care what OS you run, only the instructions it's given. However, it could be part of a ROM/BIOS design. Only certain types of file systems, or boot sectors would be recognized, etc.

    I have been hearing a lot about this lately, and was ready to believe it, until, I forget where, I saw an interview with the head of IT for the Miami Herald. It is an all Mac shop, and use so many custom OS9 appz, applescripts.. that a forced move to 10 would be suicide for them, and may even prompt them to look at the wintel world. I think that there are a lot of places like that, Ad agencies using ols 14.4 modems to connect to "Ad-times" and so on. Apple would alienate too many of it's core users, for whom an OSX option does not yet exist. These companies spend LOTS of money with Apple. I could only see this happening, IMHO, perhaps on the consumer systems. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

    Sorry for not posting the translation right away, but first of all I knew you guys like google translations and secondly it is never too late to learn a 2nd or 3rd language. Might open some of those narrow horizons too.



    As for the source, as mentioned, it came in a "spam" mail from a swiss french Mac dealer.

    And I don't think that has to be mentioned here, which one exactly, it doesn't matter.



    Note also that he's offering extra rebates now.

    Anyone who thinks Apple is going to introduce new desktop hardware within the next two years that won't boot in 9.x is out to lunch.



    Even Apple reckon only around 20% of their users will have switched to X by the end of the year. What are you going to do, lock out 80% of your user base from buying new kit!?



    The issue isn't that these people are luddites, it's that they have complicatd workflows to support, that aren't going to change overnight whatever Apple does. They will still need to buy new hardware, and that hardware will have to be compatible with their existing workflows.



    One almost certain way to kill Apple hardware sales is to introduce X-only desktops.

    We have that particular problem where i work. We have a complete custom software solution, with a bunch of coding in frontier, applescript, and VB crap for Office. What sux is its all through SQL, anyone know of a good client that you can get for OS X, because then I'd try and attempt porting at least some of it. But I mean if we were forced to move to X, and I'm pushing hard for a hardware upgrade, that would be the tombstone for our grave. I really really hope they don't.

    Check out his OS X page. It has loads of apps listed. If you can't find what you are looking for, simply e-mail Jeff because he will be glad to help you find what you are looking for. As for the OS 9 stuff... You should be migrating over to X (and soon). It's either that or be obviated.

    Ain't that the truth... A friend of mine works for a shop that happens to have a new G4, which they use on a daily basis. He wouldn't give me any details, because of NDA, but said it is dammm fast. BTW... they are a 100% OS 9 shop, due to said complex workflow.



    A lot of plugins and support apps for major packages do not work in X yet.
