What better time for Apple to announce a product or products that address this key area currently being embraced by the Wintel duopoly? Apple can be a player in a concept they have focused on (digital hub) or they can be relegated to the sidelines by neglecting to address, like it or not, a KEY part of a true digital hub.

Eugene, why cant the iBox sit on the network too? It would make sense for such a device to be a dedicated TV device, another resource on the network. Like the internet itself, home networks will be based on the idea that there isn't 1 hub, but a number of connected devices. Now, Apple could ignore this segment of the market if it wishes too, as you have said there are other players. But what if Apple did produce something - another iDevice to further support the platform and iTMS in particular.

I the meantime, does anyone have any hints for transferring analogue (VHS) video to a Mac, via an All In Wonder card on a Windows PC?
You'd be using the "non-standard" at best All-in-Wonder specific apps, but other than that it is basically just converting to a valid digital format (mpeg). I used to use a pretty generic DOS-based app with a gui wrapper called avi2mpg. Just google on that, you'll find it. That was ages ago though.
Now if there is anything analog I need to convert, I just use my Sony digital camcorder since it has a built-in analog-to-digital converter. Then, it's just firewire to Final Cut Express.
P.S. As to crowded markets with giants at play, the computer market looks a bit more cut throat than the STB market don't you think?

But still, Cable companies are giving away these STBs for pennies. This would be akin to Earthlink, MSN, Comcast, AOL letting you rent a computer for $5/mo.

Heh. Ask and you shall recieve. The price is way too high though, I think that's a serious mistake. Drop (or make optional) the WiFi crap and optimize the cost of goods.

They don't let you rent the boxes at Dish? That stinks! Right now the rate is $5/mo + one of the standard packages for HD Cable. That includes the HD tuner rental. I imagine the HD-DVR will be an additional $10/mo. In order to pay off a $600 DVR purchase, that would mean owning it for several years! Better to rent stuff like this because you can just go to the Comcast office/pay center in your area and trade-up to the newest model when they come.
Holy crap, this is exactly what I was talking about above. I can't wait to read some reviews of it -- if it works as-claimed I'm order 3, plus the DVR box for my Mac.
Can anyone explain to me why, if the EyeGato TV box does the video encoding, it requires a 500MHz G4??
Just knocked themselves out of my product search, they did.
They might just be covering their butts -- make sure the machine is fast enough to do the file serving in the background without disrupting the foreground user. You could ask 'em if your hardware is up to it if you're not actively using the Mac.
