Panther DVD

OK so I decided it would be nice to have Panther all on one disk. My friend got the new 12" PowerBook recently and it came with a Software Restore CD that had Panther all on one DVD and he said it had worked fine even on an iBook so I used Disk Copy to make a compressed image of the CD and then I burned this with Toast. Startup Disk sees this as a valid 10.3 volume but my rev a PB won't start up with it. Did I copy it wrong with Disk Copy or is there some other problem? Should I have used Toast? Or maybe it was because in Disk Copy I selected the blank disk icon above the drive icon, where it says "3.9 GB MATSHITA DVDR" etc instead of the actual volume "PowerBook G4 Software"?

there are funky things you need to do to make discs bootable, although i'm not sure what all they are off hand. you try making an image using CCC? (carbon copy cloner)

I had the very same problem with my 15" albook.

Not sure how to fix it though.

CCC seems like a good suggestion, but since my combo drive is out of commission right now i will have to wait before i can test this

I don't think the big trick here is creating a bootable disc. The issue is defeating the model-specific testing done by a Panther DVD that comes bundled with your computer, so you can use a modified DVD copy as a one-disc Panther installer on any computer.

You should, of course, buy a legit copy of Panther for any computer you install it on, but having a one-disc DVD installation process beats having babysit the installation process waiting to swap CDs. It's too bad that a DVD version of Panther isn't made available for sale as a stand-alone item.

no, that is exactly the issue... but that page has changed since the last time I read it... so you should ignore that post... unless you want to make your own bootable OSX disk

aquatic would you mind posting a screen cap of the 12" restore DVD's root contents?

all you have to do is select the image you want to burn in toast and there should be an option "make bootable"

there are no specific hardware tests on the DVD for the 12"er...

alternatively you can use toast to CLONE the DVD by using your friend's 12" in target mode and hooking it up via a firewire cable when the DVD is inserted into it's drive... Last I read you can use the DVD drive in the new books while it is in this mode (in addition to the HD!!!)

Are you serious Paul that's awesome!! I had no idea. I have Panther I just want a DVD and I just made a straight up image in disk copy, I guess for some reason things didn't copy right as they always seem to in OS X and it didn't get bootable even though everything was the same in the root folder, it has

    Apple Hardware Test Read Me

    mach

    Install Mac OS X

    Read This First

    var

    etc

    Install Applications & Classic Support

    tmp

in its root dir. I'll try using CCC as it's always been stellar in the past and won't chance Toast weirding things up. It's not that it's machine specific: my friend Dan installed it on his iBook and even the hardware test should work, it just says it only works on Alu powerbooks from '03.

edit: upon inspection I noticed the shortcuts to tmp and var etc were broken. I used to Find to see if the originals were there and they are but for some reason the links are broken. Perhaps that is why it won't boot? I wish I had a DVDRW to test this with to see if linking these aliases fixed it.

there is a "make bootable" option in CCC if you want to do that...

but you still have to BURN the DVD...

there should be an option somewhere in Disk Utility or Toast... but I can't remember where...

I remember having the EXACT same problem when I was trying to burn the panther GM disks....

I forget what I changed... but it was some weird option... it was either choosing to burn the actual DMG or the mounted image from the DMG....

have you made a bootable DMG from the panther DVD?

if so try to burn THAT with toast or disk copy instead of copying the mounted image...

All OSX restore discs, CD and DVD (except the G5 10.2.7), contain a universal X installer. The system-specific restore data is extracted by a separate process using Software Restore, not the Installer. It's not that hard to find, though.

Damn. That must be it. I was wondering whether to use that or a Compressed. What exactly is the difference? Does the Master boot? I don't understand why making an image broke the links. That's shady, I guess you can't trust Disk Copy to make an image of a CD the exact same way. Unless it's a Master?
