You know when you hear about a contest on TV or something there is always a disclaimer that states that you don't have to purchase the product in order to be entered into the drawing...

why is this?

is it a law?

does every contest have to provide a "free" entry?

what about non-us companies?

It is a law. If a purchase is necessary, then it is legally a lottery... by allowing people to send in SASE, and giving a piece back for free, they slip through that legal loophole.

If they want to run a contest or sweepstakes in the US, they have to play by the United States' rules. Or else it doesn't happen.
