Okay, you guys are starting to land some darts on the board....
The 8X9 site is cinematic, and their other works are nicely varied. The 8X9 site is a break from the kind of sites done like the 2Advanced site. BUT, I must say that I like some of the other sites that 2Advanced has done for their clients.
JohnnyTaylor's site is okay, but the flippy lines go on for too long and don't do anything that special.
I'm not just looking for Flash designers though, nicely done CSS stuff really has my attention at the moment. Somebody here (have to go back to make sure I credit correctly) sent me to CSSZenGarden.com which in turn led me to Eric Meyer's book "On CSS". I'm really lost in that right now, couldn't possibly imagine trying to learn to do a hot Flash site like some of these guys....
This has a good example of what I'm talking about. The guy obvoisly knows a fair bit a about flash (pulsating lines a speciality) but when you go to one of the websites he's done, riprecords.com , you see that when you try and sign up for info (an important business - customer connection) there is the text "your email" *inside* the textbox you have to type into.
Now, instead of A) just putting the text next to the textbox like everybody else or using some fancy javascript to delete it automatically they've went for option C) which is an entire paragraph of text saying "IMPORTANT: Delete the 'your-email' text before entering your email in the box below."
This is *not* good web design, and I wonder how anyone can type the above text without wondering if there is maybe something else they can do to fix the problem.
It reminds me of the bookThe Psychology of Everyday Thingsby Don Norman which makes me think about design every time I open a door that is so poorly designed it need instructions written on it (i.e. "Push" or "Pull").
Okay, finally found my old links. These are all pretty unique websites. I'm sorry, this stuff is all flash-based, but that's all I have! Anyway, check them out:
What's the going conventional wisdom about Flash-based sites? It seems that these web design firms are doing them without even flinching. Some interesting sites Mbezzo.
Well Flash is certainly a lot of fun and there's some fantastic skill involved in making some of these Flash sites but I must refer to previous comments above about Design versus Style. The 8x9 site is Design, the 2advanced site is Style. I agree that many of these Flash-based sites are of the same ilk.
Any site that makes me wait for elements to fade into view had better be very engaging. The "automated machine" look is really interesting but it sure has been done to death and seems to be an overused paradigm for people opting to use Flash for their site designs.
For people who don't play Doom or Myst, the custom interfaces on many of these "machine age" Flash sites are too complicated and too arcane to allow easy, confident navigation of the website by mere mortals (let alone clients who often barely know how to use their own email software.
All of these sites have been great so far....don't stop!
Edit: Ooooh, the Hicksdesign site is nice! CSS is where I'm at mentally right now anyway....

I would have to disagree. Most of the clients of the above web-sites are large corporations or professional companies that care about about their image, no doubt they pay for it, thus I believe that the people that are in charge of comissioning their work are educated professionals and in some cases creative professionals, who have a good idea of style and are looking to be impressed, not joe blo small business owner looking for a web-site done to an affordable budget.
Any site made completely in Flash, is not a good example of web design. Multimedia, maybe.. but web design is really more about useability, compatibility, download times, and getting the information the visitor seeks, into their window as quickly and as painlessly as possible.
Most of the examples shown so far, do nothing for these criteria. Some are fine examples of multimedia, sure...
I mean we are all impressed with fancy doo-dads, but how many of these types of sites would you go to over and over again, looking for content? And despite what anyone says, the web is about content. Thats what people have internet connections for, to get information.. not to watch a tv commercial. They have TVs for that.

The International Herald Tribune has a very interesting way of displaying news articles. One which doesn't require any scrolling. IHT has very nice site design.

Flash is just a tool. Web is always changing and designers are there to evolve it, some fail, some succeed. The definite criteria for a great web-site today will be changed by designers tomorrow.
Anything is possible and you have the power to decide at a present time if what you see works for you. Don't close off future possibilities.
Pixelranger has to be the best use of Flash I've seen in years. Wow. Nice, smooth, subtle. Has a sort of Halo look to it, something that the Covenant would make. ;0
...so far no one has knocked them out of the top spot...and I really WANT you guys to do it. I'm looking for inspiration and finding nothing but stylin'.
No prizes, I just figured that somebody could show me some really nice websites because darnit, they've proven very difficult to find~
I really like the above site as far as portfolio sites go. I dont agree 100% with everything done there, but this is the direction I am going to take my portfolio in...
With Pixelranger... I love their Genesis Project. I could buy a DVD complete with such relaxing scenes.

Seriously, they're a pain to navigate and the actual content they try to deliver often takes a backseat to shiny things and blinky lights.
Some impressive technical work here, and a couple that really stand out design-wise, but overall I have to wonder what all of it is good for.
