but what's important:
Quote:

The worm infects computers using Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating systems, though other computers were affected by network slowdowns and a flood of bogus messages.

Yeah, my roommate has already received almost a dozen of these.

I asked him to forward them to me so I could look at them. He actually hesitated before doing so (he uses Outlook, not Express) because he said he wouldn't trust Microsoft to forward them without opening and running things in them. Heh.

One statement comes to mind regarding how Microsoft treats it's Windows user base:

"Thank you sir! May I have another?!"

I'm getting the bounced emails... I never got the original, but apparently one of my Windows "Friends" did and spoofed my address.

Of course, this is the first piece of Spam I've gotten for months, so I guess I'm just spoiled

A Microsoft inside joke goes as follows

"Hey you know why we code named the next version of Windows 'Longhorn' right?"

"It's because our customers are like cattle, they take whatever we feed them"

    true story

Omar, from that Apple video, was just on the "Today Show" talking about that virus and how to protect yourself. Apparently, he is now an "Internet Analyzer."

Let's throw a Mydoom variant (not much changed) into the mix:

    http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...1472490,00.asp

    Quote:

Russian anti-virus specialist Kaspersky Labs has identified a variant of MyDoom, the worm that has been spreading through the Internet at a furious pace since Monday.

The variant, which Kaspersky has labelled MyDoom.b, has a slightly larger payload compared with MyDoom.a and targets Microsoft Corp. for a denial-of-service attack to be launched starting on Feb. 1, instead of The SCO Group Inc. The worm features minor modifications to the text of the e-mail that carries it, but is otherwise identical to the original.

As much as I sometimes gloat over MS' virus problems, I also heard that the virus is slowing down the Net generally. I am having some speed problems on my normally perfect high-speed service tonight, and I wonder if this virus might be causing it.

I talked with our campus IT director today... here's what he said:

At its peek we were handling over 100,000 extra virus-infected emails per day! (Average mail volume including spam is around 40,000 messages/day). That's 70%

Our mailserver has generally not had a back-log of mail of more than 5 minutes, even at peak load. However, he has received mail delayed elsewhere for many hours. AOL mail can be delayed for over a day.

Sounds like it's really taking a toll. I wonder what Sunday will bring...

my dsl has also beern pittifuly slow...damn these viruses, this writer should get 20 years in hard labor. Mitnik got 10 and caused far far less damage and harm...who knows what doom payload drop on sun will bring (at least it's not aimed at itunes with the pepsi deal).

school has been verry slow two - running a backbone fiber connection from sprint (all local schools and community colleges share a HUGE fiber pipe on a wan (or 2 or 3))

OK, this is probably a stupid question, but bear with me. I started getting these emails tonight. I've gotten 28 since I left for work at 6pm. I blame Kinko's, but that is another story. The question that I have is this...

How did I get one from my email address? I use Mac OS 9.2.2, so the virus shouldn't be able to send mail from my computer, right? Or I am screwed since I use Microsoft's Outlook Express?

    Sorry for the stupid question.

(Just got another one, make that 29!)
