iBook to sleep while carrying?

Hello,

Sorry if this post is in the wrong place, I'm a newbie so pls be gentle...

Ok, my question is:: how dangerous is it for my iBook to carried around (in a bag, etc) while it is in sleep mode? I understand the HD is turned off in sleep mode, so a few bumps shouldn't damage it. But are there other mechanical devices which might get damaged by carrying it around while the machine is sleeping? Or is it safer to just turn it off when I put it in my bag and go someplace...?

Thanks,

.heifetz

It is PERFECTLY okay to carry it around in sleep mode. That's kind of the whole point of sleep mode: To be able to revive your computer quickly after transporting it.

Basically, sleep mode turns off all the systems in your iBook except for a tiny part of memory that keeps your system state intact. Have no fear.

Ok, thanks for the info! It's just so weird getting used to the idea that sleep mode is actually 'safe'. I've been using a PC for 10 years and recently got my first Mac and just can't believe how well that feature works. At first I was scared of putting it to sleep for the night even, afraid that it would drain the battery ...

Haha. Welcome to the world of Macintosh. Where everything works better, not just sleep mode

As for your battery draining, while in sleep mode it should only use about 1% an hour, so if you sleep for 8 hours you'll loose approximately 8% battery life. Although it is a good idea to keep your laptop plugged in when you are able to.

Oh, I thought keeping the computer plugged in damages the battery and reduces its lifespan...? Or have I been misinformed?

The Mac has power management tools built into it. When the battery's done charging, it's kind of taken out of the power loop when the machine is plugged in until that instant when its unplugged.

As long as you don't keep using some of the battery life and then recharging it over and over again you should be okay. Leaving it plugged in is essentially no different than having a desktop Mac plugged in once the battery is charged.

Hmmm.. ok. It's just that I've read reports that keeping the computer plugged kills the battery, namely here ::

    So that's why I'm a bit confused...

Are there any official guidelines stating that keeping the computer plugged is safe for the battery?

No there are no official guidelines about stuff like this. My advice: just do what you want. If you feel like using it unplugged, do it. If you feel like using it plugged in, do it. There's no significant damage either way. And for god's sake, just let your computer sleep when you move it. That's the reason the feature's there. I hate restarting. I absolutely never shut my powerbook down. Never. I can't remember the last time I did, actually. That's a good thing.
