I plug in my FireLite as usual but it doesn't appear anywhere, not in Finder or Disk utilities.

I'm running OS X Jaguar, can't think of anything changing since I last plugged in the drive

With my Firewire drive, an ezquest (externally powdered) the drive gets real testy if I start up the computer, (while its connected to the external drive) and the external drive is not powered up.

And more so, if I turn off the power of the external drive while that drive is mounted on the desktop...

Um, well, YEAH - you're not supposed to power down a mounted drive..
