Lemon Bon Bon, I agree, but certain things came to mind while reading your post(s). There would have to be some serious distinctions between a cube or sub-tower, and the Pro-Line Towers. Expandability is one of them, but other factors would have to be included as well (FW2?, USB2?, Processor?, Bluetooth? maybe). And more importantly for a box targetted at gamers, the most popular games have to be available for them to use on the new boxes (I'm not sure if that one has been done yet). I don't think that Apple will use a "Build it and they will come" philosophy. The timing isn't quite right. The product lines areas are little too close together right now. When Apple gets rid of the G4 in the Pro Line, they should have enough of a gap between the Consumer and Pro line-ups, then would be a good time to intro a "value gamer's tower".
Got a request directed to any of you folks out there that have the ability to render pictures, like were posted in past threads (particularly when the "banned" case pix appeared).
Here's the request:
Would you render a case that includes the following requirements, then post the picture - room for built-in power supply, 1 AGP slot, 2 PCI slots, 1 HD, 2 optical drives, allows a 17" flat panel display to be clipped to a side for portability, storage compartment for mouse/power cables/monitor cable/LAN cord, allows a keyboard to be clipped to the other side for portability, handles, USB connections on the front and either rear or bottom (ala cube), and most importantly ... Apple Style?
As you can tell, I'm after a LAN Party type box, and just curious because it kinda goes along with the larger cube ideas being tossed around.
If I'm "off my rocker", well ... it isn't the first time, won't be the last.

wow u really want some specifics why don't u draw something up and post it, i really don't see apple making something like that because of all the 1k to 2k priced computers they already have
Frankly if your a major gamer a mac really isn't the computer to get. although that appears to be changing slowly however

Heh, actually ... I'm not a major gamer, but you know how an idea hits you (right between the eyes). This one did a couple of times. I finally paid attention to it after all this conjecture about replacing the Pro Towers with Cubes. Which I prefer to see the Towers go to a "workstation" type of machine, and the Cube design go to a "headless" advanced consumer box. Semi-Pro, lets call it. Well, the portability/ convenience factor seemed obvious, and Lemon Bon Bon had a slant on the gaming end of things, which reminded me of my idea.
I've listened to friends that are really into gaming, and also have done some case modding both for myself and other friends. When I would do the modding, I'd bring over my PC to my friend's place and hook it into his network and usually get into some game sessions after the modding. Carrying all the stuff around can be a pain.
Hence the idea. I realize that the Mac isn't known as a major gaming box, but the friends I listened to expressed interest in it. Saying that they wished more games would be available for it, because the "Cool" factor was in the design. They particularly liked the Cinema Displays. Now if Apple gets better H/W, and if gamers are interested in some of Apple's products, and if more games become available for Mac, then it could be a good market for Mac (as gamers are always upgrading the equipment to play the latest greatest). Also, it would give college students another "semi-portable" option that's more powerful than all the others. Still, alot of "if"s
But yes, it's a long shot, and definitely not ready for "prime time" ... yet. I figured it was worth sharing, because it appears alot of folks are into the gaming scene. My drawing would pretty much be limited to wireframe type stuff for now. That's why I asked if anyone wanted to render a concept, and the specific requirements. The render jobs I saw posted in other threads were great. Wish I had the S/W and knowledge to put them to use. And before anyone flames me about the PC, I use a Mac for 99% of my home stuff. The PC mearly makes me appreciate my Mac to the fullest, even though it's only a 9600.
OOPS, i told you i was in a rush, i forgot about PCI cards... Hmm, but isnt almost everything that's used in a PCI port available externally as well? or am I wrong? If no, im sure apple could make it into an external device easily..............

Two Words: ProTools HD. (which doesnt run it X yet, but they will soon....I hope)
i dont know about about bringin back the cube for more originality for apple but i do hope that with the next computer ,hopefully G5, there comes a completely new design. an exterior to rivavl the new interior as well (meaning cpu)
You know what they should have? Firewire cases (like the ones for HD's and Media Drives (cd-rw, etc) but for PCI Cards.... You could use them on laptops, imacs, and everything... Just a thought..

It would be good especially or sound cards, but you'll need faster firewire. 1600Mbps (200MB)
Apple should re-realease a semi-round cube. Either G3 sorta crappy consumer model or 600-700 G4. Video card. . .meh. . . sound card. . . meh. They need a REAL consumer computer. Consumers don't need expandibility. This could sell for say 500-1000. People can still use cheapo beige CRT screens. Tada!
Hmm G4 Cube with space for full-length AGP graphics card, PCI slot, integrated power-supply and sound card... can you say NeXT?
Cubes were the answer to the desktop, not knee-knocker foot stubber. Especially when the desk space is then turned over to the magnificent Cinema displays. I loved 'em and ? wish I could upgrade to use two screens and really top of the line video. Mine are maxed out in memory and are 500s.
BUT, having proved that they could put all that power in the small package, then combined it in a single package in the new iMacs, I would like to see if they can do something even better in the next great design. I don't mind the gumdrop at all, so I'm cool with that, but I wonder if they could make a small box, sphere, tetrahedron, pyramid that could link to the LCDs it would be a real and worthy successor to the best ever mac.

Apple should release a Cube big enough to accomodate a full AGP (NOT PCI) card, connectors on the back, and integrated everything else.
