I would just like to say, that Apple will NOT release products when they feel the economy is in an upturn. That just doesn't make good business sense. What they will do and ARE doing is pumping out good products that keep getting great press so when people can afford to buy a new comp, they'll remember the name Apple since that was one of two companies during the down turn that they kept hearing great things about. Marketshare is only won with mindshare, and by continuing to produce great products, Apple is certainly getting a lot of attention.

I sure hope this is true - I remember the old IIvx fiasco (three or four month shelf life, then boom, out came a new machine at twice the speed at the same price) ... that really put a few people off Macs.

Well, I've not received information from this person before. I know she works on processor development for IBM and I've helped her with some SiGe characterization. We happen to be discussing our mutual software woes, when I said I couldn't wait to upgrade my mac. She then said, "Oh, I'd wait 4-5 months. We're going to demo the G5 in October and it should be ramped up quickly after." the quote might not be super exact but the essence is there. Again, she for sure works on IBM processor development and she sounded pretty matter of fact. But I've never gotten information from her before, and I wouldn't have this time except the subject just happen to come up. I think if I would have asked her, she would have said she couldn't talk about it.... but since I didn't come across looking for a scoop (because I wasn't), she let me in on it.
That's all I have. Take it or leave it. I'm taking it. She really isn't a mac fanatic who hypes stuff.
How Now BrownCow? Care to be more specific?

Not really. Could get people in trouble. Was told somewhat in confidence. Plus, I would not want to be accused of being "inaccurate" if I happen to be wrong. There is nothing worse in life than being flamed by the all powerful all knowing AI.
The name I heard was not Lixar or anything similar either. It was actually a *very* large org.
The PPC Power4 light chip isn't going to be ready for the next 1.5 or so years. So to address the problem Apple is going with a Motorola G5 (We all know they have been working on one, and that some specs have been conveniently "pulled" from motos website as of late).
The G5 will be the Mot 7500 cpu we heard talk about a year or so ago. The chip should be ready for production, and can take velocity engine (v. 2 perhaps ?), DDR333, and a proper system bus.
This will be Apples "Power" cpu for about 1 year. When the chip gets cheaper, it will find its way into PowerBooks and iMacs, and the PowerMacs will get new Power4 light G6's.
This is almost what happened with the G3 and G4. G3 was IBMs baby, and was used in the PowerMacs for about a year. Then Moto did the altivec thing, and released the G4.
I don't think that Apple are ready to dump Moto just yet. They do need some cpu in the lower end lines (the "i" and "e" comp), and the G4 sinply wont cut it for the next 2 years (think about it - it just wont scale that high).
And looking at Apples earlier CPUs, they wont release a new CPU just for the low end. (disregarding the 603e).

I'm pretty sure the 8500 is not a desktop chip, therefore ur logic is flawed
So, will it be the good news or the bad? Or is there some in between news I haven't thought about?

Well, this is IBM, remember.
The real news is that the last round of PMacs have 1.75, 2.0, and 2.5GHz 64bit G5 clocked back and partially disabled. On Oct. 15, Apple will have a download utility that works only on Jaguar for .mac users. Run the utility, provide your credit card number and $500 later an authorized Apple tech will come to your house and enable the G5 features along with a full 333MHz FSB.

... waxing that johnson in public again? Oh hang on, the irony detector's got something ... a self awareness reading, ok so it's not himself of whom he's speaking, so it must be other people he's making fun of.
just a little side info--when IBM talked about their new facility they are building, they said they would have .1 micron cpus coming out @ beginning of 2003. Obviously I have no clue what they are making there, since they said, "embedded, low server, desktop" almost covers everything. However, just a little lighter fluid on the flame of the IBM rumor.

Has Apple realized that by the time the G5 is released at the rumored clock speeds, Intel's processors will probably be upwards of around 4 or possibly even 5 Ghz. I understand Mhz aren't everything. I am a Mac guy and proud of it. It's great that the G5 may be out by mid to late 2003, but by then, Apple may still be behind...I'm just worried, thats all...

... my theory is speculation will increase until Apple actually releases the damn thing who-knows-when.

hope in OCT?
oct = ibm talking about new proc.
Just like the G3/G4 situation, just reversed.

Uhm. the 8500 is the embedded chip... Ah Then I ment the 7500, which would be a proper desktop chip.
Just insert 7500 wherever you find 8500.
Ah.. ill edit the post.
I believe the REALLY good news: no more Motorola.

I'm sure Motorola's G4 will still be used for quite a long time, at least in low-end macs. And G4 is not so bad as many of us say - just not perfect.
By the way, hold down the shift key and type 'G4'.
Nobody put IBM together with Apple though, and nobody of course knew that the chip had altivec.

Nice to see someone pays attention around here...
More fuel -- there's been talk of a POWER4 'workstation' CPU coming since last year.

Do we know now that Altivec is included? I don't think this is that clear!!!
