iTunes streaming without iTunes?

I have a rather large music collection, part of which I listen to only once in a while. Since I do only have a rather old Powerbook with small HD, I keep the music on an external drive which, of course, makes the Powerbook less portable than I'd like it to be.

Since I have a small Linux home server, I wonder if there is any iTunes compatible streaming solution that allows me to browse through the music library and have it streamed to my 'book via WLAN. Anyone know of something?

Oh, and Apple, get your ass in gear and port at least the streaming part to Linux.

I think there's a jTunes project going on. Check sourceforge.net.

Have you thought about Darwin Streaming Server and a freeware Rendezvous implementation?

Thanks for the pointer to jTunes, it helped me to find http://mt-daapd.sourceforge.net/, a project that implements the DAAP Protocol Apple developed for iTunes streaming. Works like a charm
