Hi,

I am looking for a parental control software for web sites that's compatible with Panther. Any recommendations? I have searched version control but nothing good out there.

thanks

You have a few options, but I don't believe any of them are free.

I found a few things at MacMall Try searching around there a little more. If you are in the US you can probably go to your local CompUSA store (or any store that sells Mac software) and check around for something there.

Just a note, in the future something like this will get a better response in the Software forum.

What a coincidence. I came here to post almost the same question. I would like to figure a way to block certain web sites from loading. I'm mostly interested in blocking my kids from accessing games so they can concentrate on homework.

I'm just guessing on this, as I've not tried anything like this myself

If you're trying to block specific known sites rather than just general porn etc. you can use PithHelmet for Safari. Just use the same technique it uses to block ads from a certain server address to block an entire site.

Also you can use different logins with reduced priviledges to block a certain user from accessing certain apps. For more see: http://dummies.com/WileyCDA/DummiesArticle/id-2394.html

SquidGuard is the standard tool for more generalized web-filtering in the Unix world but I wouldn't expect anyone to be able to install and run it without some experience of compiling applications from source and all that unix jazz. (It's generally run by a sys admin for a whole network of computers).

edit: have a look at http://www.osxgnu.org/software/Secur...ent_filtering/ for content filtering (i.e. it looks at the page and blocks it if it has rude words etc.) However it looks reasonably tricky to set up, in fact Apple's page on the software says you need the BSD api installed which I think is off by default unless you do a custom install: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...ringproxy.html

There's also a commercial program called Intego Content Barrier though I have to say that people making money off of parent's fears leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Their page is full of ominous threats about sexual predators and suggests you set up the software to email your phone so you can instantly react to threats to your kid. \

It also got a crappy review here: http://www.vnunet.com/Products/Software/1148593
