I've noticed that some of the desktops people have posted here have customized icons for the hard drive. Are these icons hidden away somewhere in Panther or do they come from another scource?

You can use an application like CandyBar to achieve this. More info can be found at the link below.

You don't need Candy Bar to do this, as foad suggested. Easy-to-change icons have been featured since Mac OS 8, as I recall, maybe earlier.
How to do it:
1. Copy an image to the clipboard.
2. Select a file or folder in the Finder.
3. "Get Info" on it.
4. Click the icon in the window.
5. Paste.
Bada-boom!
You can download icons from places like www.xicons.com and copy them onto your files and folders.
1. Select source icon,
2. "Get Info".
3. Click icon.
4. Copy.
5. Paste onto file/folder as described above.
To remove a custom icon, simply Get Info on the file, click the icon, and press the delete key.

I guess the Nationalmuseum was behind you, right?
Whenever I go to Stockholm in winter I always stroll over there. Imagine the earlier scene that took place just a few feet away.

Yeah that works too.
I was more thinking of a system wide use.
