I remember there were guitar tuners for OS 9 that used your mic and could tune a guitar for you. I can't seem to find anything like that for OS X, only ones that play the notes for you.
i just use AWS guitar tuner. it only plays the notes, but if you play guitar, you should be able to tune by ear (if you have something playing the correct tone). go to either versiontracker or macupdate and look around, and let me know if you find anything better, but aws is pretty good.
Petersen makes the best tuners and I'd rather use sabine tuners than korg. Haven't heard of any software tuners for X. I'm surprised they didn't include it in Garage Band.
Call me old-fashioned, but I just put on a song, and tune my guitar to it.
For example, "The One I Love" by REM. The beginning of the song is E and D. I get my low E string so it's in tune with the guitars in the song, turn off the stereo, and tune the rest of the strings to each other.
Of course, when you're on stage, this is inappropriate, and you'll need a tuner with lights. But if you're messing around your place, why spend $$ buying a tone generator when you have all your music at your disposal?
I'd imagine that whichever software tuner's the best for guitar is best for bass too. Or you could just get a cheap real tuner and be done with it (unless you really want to lug your mac with you everywhere). This one is pretty good, or you could go with this one if you want the pedal variety. I know two bass players who use this tuner, but I think the DT-10 (second link) is better.
While I'd concur with the "buy a real tuner" camp, if just for the convenience of its portability, if you're using any app under OS X that can host Audio Units (Logic, GarageBand, Digital Performer, or a number of freebie apps), check out Emagic's ET-1 AudioUnit tuner. Works like a charm on my instruments. I've used it in both GarageBand, and a cool, free for now, program called RAX.
