why didn't i get a superdrive?
Hello,
When I bought my 15" 1.25 powerbook, I figured I would never need a portable DVD writer so I might as well save the $200 for a rainy day. Bad Idea of course. A month ago I switched to Directv and got a Tivo unit. In searching for the best way to archive stuff off of it, I realized I could use an analog to DV converter. Last week I found a brand new one at a yard sale and bought it for $120. Of course it works great with the tivo and imovie and I can even take old family VHS tapes and convert them. Great stuff.
But now i'm stuck, I don't have a DVD writer. I would love to sell this computer and get the super drive model but I wouldn't want to do it over the internet.
If I buy an external writer, what software do I need to burn?
I was looking at the LaCie that comes with toast, is toast compatible with imovie?
Your advice is appreciated

I'd go for an external drive, many are faster and support more formats. No idea on the software required.

IIRC iDVD works with external drives now...
Are you sure?
I don't think so. I can find no such mention from Apple.com. I actually found "Burning DVDs requires an Apple SuperDrive" regarding iDVD.

it might be that it can run on superdriveless macs with iDVD 4 but I had a feeling that I read that somewhere...
I know at the very least the above (able to run) is true...

Steve Jobs mentioned something along this line at the iLife '04 introduction.

But wasn't that the 'archive and burn later' feature? That's where you can do a project on a non-Superdrive machine, and then transport it to a superdrive machine for later burning.

There are cracks floating around who enable iDVD to work together with external drives. Of course, these are not 'approved' by Apple, but they're a way to make it work.
As a legal alternative you can just transfer it to a machine with a superdrive in it, and burn it there, as bauman already said.
what makes iDVD so necessary?
(I didn't get a superdrive, because I intend to get an 8x+ when I can)
I looked on apple.com and the deal with idvd 4 is that you can use it to edit on a combo drive but you can only burn onto a superdrive.
Here is what I'm going to do: Get a large external drive to store all of my video and finally get around to properly backing up my powerbook and desktop PC. I'm going to hold off on buying any external DVD drive because I do hope to eventually get a superdrive PB (with luck maybe this summer).
As a recent switcher I can't stress enough how happy i am with my Powerbook, and i think this site has a lot to do with that.

Yeah, you're right. Mea culpa on the ambiguity of my post.
