Mail: scrolling messages with keys

I've been trying to scoll messages in Mail using the arrow keys. I select some text in the message part of the window to change the focus from the list of messages section, but the message list section is always scrolled when I press "down". This is getting quite irritating: what am I doing wrong ? Does Mail allow you to scroll messages using the arrows ?

    Only if you open the message in its own window. Otherwise, it goes down or up the list of messages.

    In my experience, clicking once in the message when it's in the preview pane will let you scroll up and down using the arrow keys. If the message list is selected, it'll scroll through the messages.

    The biggest annoyance is when the two collide...



    Select a long mail message so it shows in the preview pane. Use the spacebar to scroll down. Whoops, went too far, hit the up arrow... and you get another message. D'oh.

    Use "Shift + Space" to go back up.
