The prices on Apple's portables are great. I think the iBook and Powerbook are priced just right. Sure, they might be a tad more expensive then a PC with comparable specs, but thats comparing a Mercedes to a Ford (at least I didn't say Yugo).
Lets see what specs we get on the new desktops before we make judgements about the price. If we get a G4 in the iMacs at 999.....well that would be just skippy wouldn't it?
I know rbald's a troll and I generally ignore such posts, but sometimes I can't resist dropping verbal loogies on these guys. Hey, they came here willingly, why not make the most of it?
this could also mean "low-end g5 available in february, high-end g5 available in march" or something like that ... wouldn't be the first time for apple to announce something available a few months later.</strong><hr></blockquote>
Now I get it.
What I meant is that Apple would not sell G4s and G5s at the same time because the old G4 towers will affect the sales of these two products:
1) iMac. If people can get a G4 tower for cheap with a similar processor than the iMac (probably even better if the iMac continues with the G3) and being able to get a larger screen (even more if the promo is still up by then), plus the advantage of having much more upgradeability, then they may chose it over the new iMac, thus affecting iMac sales.
2) Low-end G5. Many low-end PowerMac buyers chose this one because they want a tower (expandability and flexibility) and they do not need the full processor power and thus won't invest in faster PowerMacs. So, if cheaper G4s are still selling many of these potential low-end G5 buyers may decide that honestly they do not really need the power of the G5 and, therefore, they may prefer to save a few bucks and get an old G4, thus a decrease in G5 sales.
So if the promo is until January 31st, then no G5s will ship before that date.
Now, I am almost certain the G5 will show up at MWSF, although they may very well start shipping one or two months later.

I still don't see how you are coming that conclusion. Nothing new from Apple ever ships the next week. And there are plenty of people who buy the top of the old line because they know the price drops. If the promo is a telling sign, then it should last until June 31st if no G5s are coming out following your theory.

Thus, decreasing the number of potential customers for the new products.

No. Because they can be announced at MWSF BUT they may ship after Apple stops sselling G4s one or two months later, after the promo ends.
See, the promo is just for clearing out stock and keeping sales before the G5 ships (Presumably after January 31st).
I guess some people just couldn't stand the notion that there might not be a G5 at MWSF. Ya'll need help.
