Hi,

I just got a mini today and I want to transfer stuff from my old ipod directly to the new one so I plugged the mini in the usb port because I'm using the fw port for the old one.

the mini mounts but it doesn't show up in itunes.

Did apple restrict use with the mini with itunes over usb 2?

No, they just won't let iTunes see two iPods at once so you can easily copy between them. You need shareware to read music off an iPod, ya can do it with Apple software.

    Head to VersionTracker!

Oh, I think I didn't explain myself well. THe music on my old ipod is actually on the data part (not in the music sector) but that is another story.

Just somehow why doesn't the usb 2 work with the ipod?

I think USB2 support is intended for Windows only:

    http://www.apple.com/ipod/

"*Syncing with USB 2.0 (Windows-only) requires optional USB 2.0 + FireWire Cable."

Correct. The mini only works on Macs via Firewire.

It still sounds like you are trying to get iTunes to recognize two iPods at once, which it will not do.

Does the mini show up in iTunes if the iPod Classic is not connected?
  • Reply 7 of 19
THe mini will never show up whether or not the classic is connected.

that is, even if only the mini is plugged in, it still won't be in itunes, it'll mount as a volume on the desktop, but not show up in itunes

interesting - USB works for mounting as a HD but not with iTunes.

I wonder if the same is true of the iPod Classic...

Same is true of iPod classic.

therefore Apple RESTRICTED USB 2 use.

I'd say it's more likely that they didn't bother to write the support into the Mac version of iTunes, which makes sense considering how few Macs in the installed base have USB 2.0.

The hard drive mounting just works, probably as a standard USB Mass Storage Device

10.3.3 should let iSync and iTunes sync with iPod/iPod Mini's through USB2!

I don't think it should matter... all the Macs that have USB 2.0 also have Firewire, so it shouldn't be an issue. In fact, there are very few Macs that can run OS X to sync with the 3rd generation iPods, but don't have built-in Firewire.

What I'm actually wondering is... why did you buy the USB cable in the first place? It says right in the product description that it's meant for Windows users.

The iPod mini comes with the USB 2.0 cable.

    well, here's the thing.

I usually have my isight plugged in in the fw port.

my other usb port is always free, so it would make more sense for me to use the usb port.

and I'm soon getting a fw external hdd. It would be a pain to plug and unplug every time.

    no?

Every firewire hard drive I have seen has two ports on the back, to allow daisy chaining. Besides, I've heard that there are problems when connecting an iPod and an iSight at the same time.

This could all be fixed with a Firewire hub.

Yeah... the Mini ships with both firewire and USB cables... no need to have bought another one.

You could always go with a USB 2.0 external drive or pick up a firewire hub and you'll have as many firewire ports as you'll need.
