Here is what I see as a breakthrough communication PDA.

Hardware.

Ipod size and white

Color OLED and full lenght display

Built in mini camera.

Firewire.

Built in GPS receiver with World MAP and roads coverage.

- Download Maps for your location from mac.com

Built in WiFI Max for metropolitan Internet access

- Apple signs contracts with WiFi MAx providers.

Software

Only 3 Apps

- Built in ichat

- Built in Address Book

- built in GPS Navigator with ichat integration.

Apple deploys a range of Internet-to-POTS gateways so the device can place calls to regular phones all over the world

The service is a .Mac option and costs 299 USd / year with unlimited calls worldwide.

Fully syncable with Macs with the option to save video chats to disk.

Device can also record movies and stream them.

Well, I think it's an interesting idea, but I doubt it would happen. Also, I'm guessing you mean iChat a/v, cuz typing on an oled the size of an iPod wouldn't be so fun.

I like it. Here's what I've been thinking about. In the future (maybe distant future), I think a total convergence device would be:

    1. a cell phone

    2. a camera (recording gps coords of each image)

    3. a gps (with maps, etc.)

    4. an mp3 player

    5. a pda with address book

Just about every combination of the above has been done, but I'm sure it's awfully difficult to throw all those features into one device and still keep it small with reasonable battery life.

Right now there is only 1 camera on the market (that I know of) which records gps coordinates in the metadata tag of digital images. I can't imagine why it's taking so long for this feature to be implemented...

I can see the technology coming together, but they would probably need an iBook-size device for all those features. Future, future hardware. Since lots of people have the MP3/pda/phone/camera features in cell phones already, what about another device with the rest of them. Or, maybe bring an ultra-subnotebook to life with mini-Mac features and the GPS stuff.

Could be interesting, especially to those that work in the field.

I personally would love to roll my Garmin into my iPod, with an incuded iPod attachment. Great idea. Will be even better when iPod goes COLOR.

Many of the new or upcoming cel phone chips have GPS receivers built into them for no extra cost. There is no reason to grow the size of the device at all, unless you want a more accessible interface.

Actually, compared to a normal cellular phone, the only two things holding this back is:

Software port of iChat A/V and adressbook.

    A harddrive!

Makes you think a bit... But I dont think Apple will ever venture into the phonemarket again.. The GeoPort was enough..
