I was on fark.com and they had a thread going on related to computer pranks...and man, were they funny (and dangerous)...

Noticebly, the most easiest platform to do these pranks is Windows. Some I am definately going to pull on some Windows user-friends of mine...maybe then they'll switch...



There was one Mac prank on the thread:



"We have a mac and a couple of PCs. Sometimes my fiancee is on the Mac in the bedroom and I'm on the PC out in the office. One time I SSHd into the Mac and started running AppleScript commands via the BSD shell. I would randomly start and stop iTunes, turn the volume up and down.



Then I made it "speak" to her using apple's text to speech system. Scared the crap out of her. She still loves me thought ;-)"



What about some more Mac pranks...harmless Mac pranks, of course...

    take a screenshot of their normal desktop



    open the screenshot as a fullscreen picture or set as screensaver



    they'll be madly clicking the HD icon and wondering why it's busted, or why apps won't focus



    an oldie but a simple prank

    My brother gave his AOL password to someone and they took control of his account a while ago. We convinced him it was a virus. After he called AOL, and got it fixed, I installed VNC and controlled his mouse and keybaord from my wireless laptop in my room. For 2 days he didn't say anything because he didn't want us to think he let a virus on the computer.



    Also, I used the screenshot-as-a-desktop thing only I flipped it 180 degrees.



    This year, I will use the comand-option-control-8 on my brother's G5.

    (Any way to make that a applescript that I can add to the startup items?)

    God, the losers at the London Drugs here just started doing that to all of their Macs. I guess they don't want people screwing up the HD name or moving things around... or, uh, TRYING THEM OUT.



    Has to be great for people touching their first Mac and nothing moves. Brilliant people there. \

    how does the screenshot/screensaver work? surely as soon as you move the mouse the screensaver deactivates?

    Well, the screensaver, yeah. These guys took a screenshot, set it as the desktop, then shrunk and hid the dock. You'd have to put the mouse over where the small dock is to have it pop up, and realize what's going on.



    I don't see how it would work as a screensaver...

    Whenever I'm annoyed at my little brother, I ssh into his box (13yo with a dual 2 G5 mind you) and do a little 'shutdown -r now'



    Then he revokes my admin access.



    Then I kick his ass

    one we did at a store in Brussels (and to a couple friends and labs...) was a script my friend knew how to make to make the Windows computer shutdown.



    Normally, he would make this script and add it to to his task bar for shutdown (so as not to need going to to Start > Shutdown > confirm, etc).



    Well.. you can guess what we would do: put the shutdown link into the startup folder.



    Obviously, renaming it sometjing critical like "Win32 Core" or something like that.

    For simple mischief (only on your machine please!)



    1. Download PhotoStickies

    2. Take a full screencapture of whatever is on screen, saving to a file.

    3. Open that file in PhotoStickies

    4. Make the image full size and center it. Ideally drag it below the menu so you can access the menu later!

    5. Make the opacity something less than 100%, like 20% or so.

    Make sure it is less than 50% or else it's very hard to set it up and undo it

    6. Turn off allow clicks and drags

    7. Set as overlay/top level (I forget the exact name)

    8. Switch to another app via command-tab.



    You'll now have an overlay of the screen on top of the screen. The machine will be usable (depending on the transparency you chose!) but it while have a ghost image over everything. The offset is really annoying



    You can also use Cronnix to schedule the startup/shutdown of PhotoStickies and it should show the previous screenshot (if you set it to

    As an example:

    Changing the autofix preferences on some ones computer in word. Have fun with it, and just randomly put in porn words or profanity. Or be more subtle and replace 'put' with 'but'

    Install a VNC server to run in the background.



    Connect remotely and let there be a "ghost" in their machine.

    VNC is awesome.



    In Windows 2000 I believe you can use the command "shutdown -i" to remotely shutdown your mates on a Windows network.

    Oooh, I like. I can just see the law firm that gets its tushie handed to it on a plate in court because 'and not' was replaced with 'and'.
