What to expect from MWSF...

in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
Whats the possibility that we'll se new Powermacs at Macworld SF in january? I know that the most realistic senario is that there are no new powermacs. And the main reason is probably that apple just released a line of Powermacs. And inferior as the current line of powermas may be apple expects us to live with it for another 12 month.

Today Steve jobs said (in paris) that OS 9 wont be able to boot on the macs after newyears eve. If you read between the lines does this mean that there are new hardware that OS 9 cant boot on or is this feature just removed by an upgrade of OS X?

Also I heard that the iMac G4 isnt doing to good.

The company that manufactures iMac G4, Quanta Computer, stopped their production in july. Will apple use the MWSF to hype up the iMac G4 (?) again?

The Quanta Computer story: <a href="http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/main_news.cfm?NewsID=5209"; target="_blank">http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/main_news.cfm?NewsID=5209;

Personally I hope to finally se some new decent performing powermacs.

The iMac is dooing poorly for two reasons:

    1. It's overpriced.

    2. Apple refuses to upgrade it.

Yeah they added a new model, but all the iMacs have the same damn CPU as when they were introduced. That's not a smart way to generate sales.

As for the price...go figure. $1700 for an iMac? You can get the same hardware on the Wintel side for MUCH less...I know someone who bought a wintel w/ 15" LCD for $1100. Sure the quality isn't comparable to the iMac, but in a slow economy people don't care so much about quality, and they can always use the MHz excuse to rationalize their Wintel purchase.

I think I read somewhere that someone else took over production from Quanta.

I think we will see new machines in January - but I wouldn't expect anything groundbreaking - no new case, no new chips, just speed bumps.

Only if the MPC74XX cpu's migrate to a smaller die. I believe, based on the gigantic heat sink, they have just about max'd out.

that is a long product cycle for the current speed offered for the iMac, 1 speed boost a year, 1 price hike, and one price cut. Add in a high end with slightly boosted video and a larger monitor....no wonder they arn't selling many of them. Apple could relly use a speed boost to the iMac line, the PM's were just bumped up so there is room to manuver. If there is not a speed boost, then I see a dim holiday buying season, and a lot of money wasted on this "Switch" ad campaign.

Well, we now have a new Powermac promotion expiring 12/31, which makes new Powermacs a little more likely....

Same thing we can always expect out of a Mac World event: a lot of hype that far outweighs the actual result. Further, Apple has shown the last year or so it does not always wait for big events to announce new harware, so at this point I expect all Mac Worlds to be about software first, hardware second.

    But that's just me, YMMV.

True... except Paris had almost no hype. And lived up to the expectations this induced beautifully!

It also has to be assumed that before or at that time a new powerbook update and ibook update will bow.

I do agree that Apple drains all the exitement out of us by updating so slowly, for instance, nothing new has been added to the tibook for almost 6 months. just keep it fresh for us and give us something to talk about by at least giving us small incremental updates. this would also help curb the rampant slowdown in purchases 3 or 4 months after an update, when everyone starts waiting for the new model to be updated, I would have already bought the tibook for law school, if I did not fear and know that apple could make a MAJOR update at any second. Instead I wait, and Apple loses the money I would have paid for Jaguar and an iPod. By the way now that it has been so long I am going to wait for the iPod2 to come out b4 I buy one. I refuse to let my desire to get a new CPU let me get bent over by Steve.

Another thing... OSX has really been beaten into our brains the last few expos (New York, Paris, and now saybold). All these expos has been about almost nothing else than OSX. I think that the next expo leaves more room for other things than OSX, something like new GOOD powermacs maybe

Funny how that is the same prediction many were making for the last MWSF and also for MWNY.

Maybe, the third time's the charm.

What to expect at MWSF? Disappointment.

    Sad but probably true.

    If not, there's always MWNY.

Is that what you want, a lower quality Mac? I thought one of the reasons we bought Macs was for higher quality?

As it stands, your argument doesn't make much sense. Do you expect Apple to have the same quality yet compete at a price that is typical of lower quality hardware? Sounds like a recipe for going out of business...

It is now fairly clear that Expos are all about software.

Apple may release hardware at any point. The MWSF/MWNY cycle is dead.

a bunch of pissing and moaning from people who claim the g4 isn't even though they own ibooks....

I don't know the word for it but it is clear that Apple is moving towards a business model that blurs hardware, OS, iApps and .mac services. I think we'll see more of the same at MWSF. We'll see more uses for Rendezvous, maybe another iApp, updates for current iApps and maybe some hardware updates.

Don't forget that the LCD iMac was introduced at MWSF.

As Steve announced that new Macs in January will not boot OS 9 that is a pretty strong indication of new Macs of some sort. Apple will not modify them to purposely not boot OS 9. No new Mac boots older versions of the OS. New releases are needed to enable the current OS to run on new hardware. All Apple has to do is not invest the time and money to update OS 9 and the result is a Mac that only boots OS X.

Perhaps the low end iMac is doing poorly. I recently read that the 17 iMac was so hot that there was a waiting list to get them. We just bought one for my wife and are waiting ten days for delivery.

Actually, that was the recipe for the original iMac's overwhelming success... Funny how some people don't get it...

Gee, we already got a MWSF thread this early? Wow... If this is not a sign that people were hugely disappointed this year...
