Whats the fastest high speed internet service?

Soon I will be getting high speed internet for my mac in a couple of weeks and I'm wondering which is the fastest.

Price is NOT a factor. At about the same I will be getting a job that pays 500 dollars a month. So, which internet service is the fastest? Also what is the average speed?

Well, it depends what you're going to do with it. Sometimes a fast upload speed can help you more than you would think.

Overall cable modems appear to be the fastest CONSUMER broadband options. There are DSL and Fiber options that can outpace cable modems, at least if you're living in the right area and can afford them.

Personally I'm looking for a new DSL option that gives me a faster upload speed because I send and receive a lot of info sometimes.

Well, I use OOL (Optimum Online). I get 10000/1000! This is all for 45 USD. However, it is not avaliable in Canada.

I will be streaming and downloading online videos. I will be doing LOTS of downloading. I will do a lot of web surfing. A lot of the time I will have multiple webpages rumming at the same. Talking to many people on MSN Messenger(when i'm on my pc). And I absolutely need the phoneline open at all times. the $500 i'll be making a month is all for stuff for me so again, price is NOT a factor.

Edit: didn't know he was 13, in which case he probably can't "buy" internet service himself anyway since a credit check is involved on most levels. I still say DSL would be the best option.

I thought DSL doesn't suffer from bandwidth problems? That is what I've always heard, and it's never made sense to me but whatever...

I use a cable modem from Pennsylvania provider (PennTeleData) and it's pretty damn fast. Using multiple programs, I can easily get up to 300KB coming into my computer at a time. Keep in mind this is going through a router and sent wirelessly to me too. My upload isn't amazing though, and I'd say that biggest thing that slows down the internet for me is when my brothers forget to cap their sharing in BitTorrent and I guess that max's out out upload and you need some to talk to servers to tell what information you are requesting.

Cable is your best bet. I could be wrong, but I doubt that $500/month will be enough for a more professional connection (dedicated T1, T3, etc)

At home, cable works pretty well for me at both uploading and downloading. I live just outside of Toronto. Be careful when hosting a website from your cable or other high-speed connection. Typically this violates the terms of service.

And all these videos you will be downloading, they wouldn't happen to be someone else's intellectual property, right? If so, why not take some of your $500/month and go to the video store?

I have a 3mbps cable modem. It is expensive and not even the fastest out there. Upload is only 256kbps though.

He is 13, it's not just feature films, it's probably lots and lots of porn

A better way to obtain movies then download is to sign up for a netflix account. You could then time shift any movie you don't have time to watch before you have to send them back.

Theoretically for $20/month I can get 36/month, but it's more like 24/month. Still for $20 you can't beat that. BlockBuster sells movies for what, $5 a movie?

I am on Aurora Cable Internet. However, only people in Aurora and Oak Ridges (North Richmond Hill), which are part of the Greater Toronto Area, have access to this. I have 9mbps service with DOCSIS2.0 for $45CDN plus 15% tax per month.

in ontario i dont know of anyone other than bell sympatico or rogers. ive had both and videotron which is shite. ide suggest sympatico (thats what i use now) i have no problems with it. if i get the right person, i end up downloading is at 150 kb/s. so u can get songs in about 10 secs. i believe its 45 for it. basically, there isnt that much difference between sympatico and rogers high speed price wise, speed wise or service wise.

According to this forum Bell Sympatico is boosting its DSL speeds in Ontario in Quebec up to 2.5 Mbps. I haven't seen this announced anywhere officially and I don't know how reputable the site is (anyone?). That being said, the speed tests it suggests you do seem to show these speeds on my line.

I've been doing some downloading and I seem to be getting a pretty consistent 300+ Kb/sec rate.

Rogers (in and around the t-dot) is 40 a month 3mbs/640. good enough for me to quickly acquire non-copyrighted material that strikes my fancy.

shaw is western canada, rogers eatern, videotron is quebec. so it depends which province he lives in basically. but, sympatico is everywhere. i believe telus has dsl now as well, buti cant see that being as good as sympatico or rogers/shaw
