Well, Think Secret is now reporting that the <a href="http://www.thinksecret.com/features/powerbookupdate.html"; target="_blank">PowerBook G4 will get a Combo DVD/CD-RW drive</a> as early as next week. Finally...

Apple could easily wait until the keynote to announce the Combo TiBook. As many have pointed out, dumping the iBook/500 with its medieval 66Mhz bus would be easy. And Apple has had plenty of practice bumping processor speed and HD space in the iMac line for two years now. So a mini-bump for the iBooks would be easy enough.

Given that an all-new iMac and significantly faster Power Macs are almost certain, an update to the entire product line no longer seems far fetched.

I'm leaving for a three-week vacation in Europe tomorrow. I'm looking forward to a kickass lineup upon my return.

If they truely believed that the PM line was to be updated, wouldn't they wait the three weeks? <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

Or are they just getting in on the Crystal Clear promotion?</strong><hr></blockquote>

Check out the viewer mail this weekend, it's basically a tax write off.. plus he has this to say:

" it's our very act of blowing several thousand dollars on a new Mac now that has guaranteed the introduction of new Power Macs in three weeks' time. We are selflessly using Murphy's Law to ensure that the rest of the Mac community can benefit from our sacrifice. "

    Longer life batteries, lighter batteries......

Personally I'm impressed by the length of the iBook battery AND the weight, five hours and five pounds. Sign me up.

Geezz, give them the moon and they want the universe.

    Damn, these rumors are spectacular!

Combined with the talk of Apple throwing a GHz party, it sounds like Apple is taking full advantage of their good fortune during this recession. Consider that Apple is profitable, in contrast to virtually every other computer manufacturer. Apple is poised to capture significant market share with OS X, as soon as it's the default OS. And I suspect that making OS X the default OS is going to be determined not only by the quality of OS X, but also by the state of Mac hardware.

It seems clear now that OS X was originally predicted to run on much, much faster hardware. And the reason for OS X sluggishness can be directly attributed to Motorola's inability to scale the G4 to respectable speeds.

The limiting factor in Apple hardware, and OS X performance, is the G4. And with the advent of the G5, this performance cap is suddenly removed, like a cork shooting from a shaken bottle. IBM clearly can provide very fast G3s, but Apple must limit their clockspeed because a GHz iMac wouldn't mesh well with a Powermac lineup that didn't even breach 900 MHz.

    So here it is:

?Moto delivers the G5 at speeds up to 1.4 GHz.

    ?Powermac G5 is introduced.

?LCD iMac is introduced, running at ~1 GHz with either Apollo G4, or Sahara G3.

-This takes care of Apple's desktop lineup, and all Macs are safely at 1 GHz or above.

?Apollo G4 is put into the Titanium, with all models using the faster 133 MHz mobo and DDR-RAM running at 266 MHz.

?iBook can't be left behind at 600 MHz, so Apple drops in the Sahara, and clocks that little sucker to ~ 900 MHz, maybe 1 GHz, if the Titanium reaches 1.133 or 1.266 GHz, as the Apollo is rumored to scale to.

Thus, the entire product line is revamped! OOHHHHHH, YEAHHHHHH!!!!!!11

The only problem with this scenario is the G5. If Moto can only deliver the Apollo G4, then revisions are much less impressive:

    Powermacs: 1 GHz, 1.133GHz, and 1.266 GHz.

iMac: Sahara G3, 1 GHz in all models. LCD, of course.

    Titanium: Apollo G4, 1 GHz

    iBook: Sahara G3, 1 GHz.

Either way, it will be a good time for Apple. With all models bustin' the 1 GHz barrier, Apple will entice great numbers of Mac loyalists to upgrade. More importantly, with OS X running on such bitchin' hardware, Apple will begin to build marketshare, DURING A RECESSION! That's is a truly amazing feat. When this recession lifts, Apple will be poised to slingshot out of their 5% share into the double digits!

Even if Apple were to announce a product line twice as powerful as wintel their market share would take at least a year to grow appreciably - even longer until their market share reaches double digits.

IMO If the pro line moves to G5 the iMac will get the G4. I think the top iMac is going to have a SuperDrive as well as a LCD.

1.) I think ATAT is very reliable. for one they always seem to be right but I also find them reliable for another reason. they never go into detail on anything. they always just make brief hints. If I were an "inside source" I would send info to them and know that people would not know where the info was coming from.

2.) DAMN. I knew I should have waited on the TiBook Maybe I'll be able to get the combo drive on eBay and swap it with the DVD-ROM

Don't worry, Michael. I haven't been home to Switzerland in a year and a half and will enjoy my little European vaction a lot more than even the most spectacuar Macworld. I already bought an iBook, which is coming along on the trip. So I won't be buying any new Apple products anyway and couldn't be disappointed even if we had another MWNY.

Such is human nature, my dear Swan. I would kill for an iBook half its current weight.

Hey, applenut, stop whining. How do you think I feel with my iBook's 66Mhz bus and CD-ROM drive?
