Bush will visit France the 6th june. Dispite the divergence of opinion i have with him about foreing policy, i expect that the visit will be fine, and that France will recieve him with dignity.

The 6th june is the date of the disembarkment of US and coalitions troops in france against the nazis in 1944. It's the 60th anniversary.

I think that it's a good occasion to warm up the relations between US and France who where in a poor shape since last year. Recently, this relations are better, with some good cooperation in foreing relation like in Haiti (even if the rebels seems to have screwed up us : they where not 3000, but only 60. Anyway this is an another story)

Bush declared that the time of divergence was over.

I hope that the divergence is not over. Sorry to disagree with your nice post, but I strongly, strongly feel that there is nothing wrong with diverging from the policies of this U.S. administration on just about every issue. France and other countries should do all they can to diverge. I hope that there are protests everywhere (although I am not sure that there will be.) I wonder if he is also going to make a stopover in Spain (just kidding).

Question: Will the French people receive President Bush "with dignity?" Or will they massively protest him?

If it's during the ceremony of the 6th june, i expect a great amount of dignity. Because the 6th june is a big commemoration. Otherwise, they may have massive protests. I think that both gov are aware of this, and will manage to avoid this situation.

The problem with divergence, is that it's traduced in Anger and sometimes hate between the two populations. If the divergence was only a matter of leader popularity, then it will be fine, but people tend to make confusions.

I am here since a sufficiant time in AO, to had the time to observe this phenomena.

I suppose there is a time to express profound differences of opinion and a time to just smile and say nothing. But I am worried that leaders (and countries), by just smiling, are ignoring the policy debate. Sometimes deeply felt differences in opinion should be expressed. Sometimes hearing those opinions an make a difference - maybe not an immediately apparent difference - but a subtle, but profound, long-term difference.

I have the same view about AO, as you know.

Just wait till DUHbya visits Ireland later this year. Hint: from what I've read, the Irish , with their calm and sweet temper, can't wait.

I think the French should pelt him with french fries and french toast while shouting "Here's you're FREEDOM buddy!"

And I hope it's not over either. It shouldn't be over with duplicitous, third rate, leftist-socialist-pacisfist regime like France. Sorry Powerdoc. The actions fot he French government were obstructionist and not the conduct of "ally" in any sense of the word.

May I refer you to the sticky thread at the top of this forum?

I don't mind if I get banned for a spell. It's about time and I might get some work done. It'll be worth it to get it off my chest - hell, I think it every time I read anything the guy posts and the thread's already derailed anyway.

SDW, you really, truly are a dickhead.

    Third rate ?

    First rate : US

    Second rate : ?

Socialist ? Ask a french socialist if he consider that Jacques Chirac or the governement is socialist.

Pacifist : it's not because that France was against the second Iraq war, that it's a pacifist countrie. For the record : participation of France in First gulf war, Kosovo war.

Speaking of obstruction, did you hear the polland leader comment about the Iraqi war ?

Luckily there is still Berlusconi to support Bush, nor Tony who was totally honest with the Iraq WOMD thing.

PS : if someone has to say something about this thread he should PM an another moderator than me. I am too angry to be impartial.
