Damn, this has to be the worst freaking time to want to buy a Mac. Wait until the end of the month, it's getting updated... oh, then wait until the 15th of Oct... might get updated...
ARGGHH!!!!

You are not alone, I'm on the same boat as you do. Recently, I'm looking for the PowerMac G4 with Apple display.
I posted this in another thread. Apple called my boss three times and are offering a $500 discount on all xserve models until sept. 30. Looks like the ol' server is gonna get a face lift. What they are going to do is anybody's guess but would be fun for a rumor sight to throw it about.
Oct 1st is the beginning of Apple's new fiscal year.
Every salesperson at Apple is working to increase their year-end revenue numbers and the promotion is a tool to help them. Sorry to burst any bubbles.

Yes but $500 is a %17 discount on the low end xserve and guessing it costs $1500 to produce. That cuts in to profits by %33. Meaning if they have sold 5000 machines before promo they will need to sell more than 7,500 to make it a financially intelligent move. At least on the hardware side of things. It would only make sense to with the new chips(1.25) that the xserve would be getting an update.
eeesh, just realized that my Pismo is now two years old. Strangely, it doesn't feel that old at all, but a little bump in the ti department around mid-october might make my visa twitch. Got student loans coming in this month. EEEEK, what to do!!!

A $500 discount on a low end xServe brings the price to $2499. Exactly the education institution price (which is still negotiable). Well within acceptable Apple margins. No news.
...introducing the 19" and 22" iMacs. ... Does Apple actually think they can sell iMacs with the same speed proccessors and just bigger screens for a year! Come on.

I know you're being sarcastic, but can you imagine the size of the frickin' base if a 19 or 22 inch LCD is used?
I think Apple realizes that 17" is probably max for a consumer all in one. Heck the res is awesome, it just needs a faster bus and processor. And oh yeah, a lower price tag.
When they upgrade the iMac they should make the low end cheaper. Perhaps keep the current models and make them really cheap. I mean these iMacs are great. If I could afford one I'd buy it immediately. They are the PERFECT College dorm room computer. Except many college students can't afford them.

Were I a betting man, I would put my money on October 7th, your lucky day, for any (hardware) announcements.
You heard it from me first.
Watch for that to pop up on MOSR...

$50 off any iBook at the education store until Sept. 25.

Unless your boat is a yacht made out of new Mac carcasses, you can only dream of touching murbot's greatness.
that's over $1,000 of retail.
We can't beat Pentium computers in mhz so we will beat them in screen size:
introducing the 19" and 22" iMacs.
It will have the biggest monitor for any consumer computer. Who cares if it still has a 800 mhz proccessor.
This move will start the great screen size wars of the 21st century. Imagine if Intel got into this. We would have a 40" screen in no time!
Okay, enough sarcasm. Does Apple actually think they can sell iMacs with the same speed proccessors and just bigger screens for a year! Come on.

ok, for the last time, i'll explain this. i've gone through this time and again. there are also various threads regarding the subject.
the iMac is priced within $50 of it's competition (when similarly speced)
on the 17" model, it comes over $100 less than a similar PC.
the iMac is priced extremly well.
now, as to whether or not they need a cheaper consumer machine period, well there i agree.
the iMac is well priced, but they need something cheaper. (and the CRT iMac ain't cuttin' it)
the eMac is ok, just shave a few hundred off it if possible.
When they upgrade the iMac they should make the low end cheaper. Perhaps keep the current models and make them really cheap. I mean these iMacs are great. If I could afford one I'd buy it immediately. They are the PERFECT College dorm room computer. Except many college students can't afford them.

Well, that's not the wording my wife would use, but I do prefer yours! heh heh
And yes, the 30th is upon us, with no new Ti Books...
Darn.
Something is up!
