Anyone have any luck scanning with the Microtek USB scanner line (i.e.; 4800, etc) in Panther? I get the spinning wheel of doom?. Their support site is vague at best.
I use a Microtek scanner at work (ScanMaker X12USL) and it's borderline goofy under OS 9, so I'd imagine its X support/compatibility to be shaky at best.
I did talk to someone at Microtek a few months ago, while chasing down a situation here where it kept crashing when I'd scan, and ended up talking to the woman about OS X and their support and she herself even said "yeah, we're not really there yet...".
I mentioned Panther to her and she honestly acted like she wasn't quite sure what that was.
I like Canon. Everyone in my family and immediate circle of friends seems to have Canon gear (i860 and i560 inkjets, S45 camera, A60 camera, LiDE30 scanner, etc.) and at one point or another I've had all of them hooked to my PowerBook. After installing the stuff from Canon's site, they ALL worked flawlessly. iPhoto, of course, supports the cameras, so no software there, just the scanner and printers.
Epson's scanners are fine in OS X, at least no better than Canon's software. They run fine as plug-ins, but the other junk they throw in -- the Toolbox for Canon, the Copy Center or whatever for Epson -- are just trash. I've yet to find a really well-done scanner driver for OS X, which is not surprising since I've yet to find a really good scanner driver on any platform. Even Vuescan has its issues.

I agree..we bought the $2500 dollar mistake a two years ago. Scan Maker 8700 Pro...it worked half-@$$ed at best. Now it is naraleptic (sp?) Sucks and we are replacing it ASAP. Nice looking paperweight though. Don't bother calling tech support either, they want to charge you (they did us) to tell you they don't have new drivers/software for their scanners. In short, STAY AWAY FROM MICROTEK.

MicroTek sux, they were good in the mid-90's but have gone steadily downhill ever since.
VueScan is worth a look, maybe it supports your MicroTek.
Canon and Epson are about neck and neck with OS X drivers, and the only ones worth considering for a new purchase.
