As posted above:
For the icon you want, do a get info. Select the icon in the info window (should have blue nimbus around it). Copy this icon.
Go to your hard drive. Get info on this. Select current icon. Paste.
All this is dependent of course on your desired icon being able to be used.
being new to mac is no excuse, im new to it and have no problem following those simple instructions. did u make sure its a proper icon file? go to one of those links download a file, right click and copy the icon, click once on the app u want to change and go to file/get info, click once on that icon then go edit/paste. not too difficult
The thing is, sometimes it just doesn't work. It has happend to me several times. I think it has something to do with the network. With certain settings your not permitted to change to HD icon. but fear not. Use the free tryout version of Candybar and you can't go wrong...
geez sorry i didn't understand it before... but i get it now
lay off me

i lied and so after like 10 minutes i finally figures it out even i can make fun of myself for this one well i got a bunch of icons from "smooth icons" and my Dock looks extremely sexy now but is there any way i can make a background color to it(the dock) i would love to see mine but with that silver color that is used so often in relation to EVERYTHING Mac or Apple puts its hands on. that would be nice.

What is your major malfunction?
It works exactly the same in Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X.

That's part of the system and isn't quite as easy to change.
That's not to say it can't be changed.
/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemIcons.bundle/Contents/Resources/iMac.icns
That's the one. Replace it with an icns file of your choice that has the same name.
