I am ready to buy an Xserve.

I heard some chatter that updates may soon be released.

Anyone here know or have ideas on the subject.

Thanks,

Thom

If you are ready to buy, then buy! The Xserve JUST started shipping. It was announced only about 3 months ago. It's BRAND NEW! Go for it!

Everything from Apple will ALWAYS be updated. GM, Honda and BMW keep updating their cars and Intel has the next fastest chip on the drawing board.

Get what you want, when you need it. If you keep waiting for the next best thing before you act, you're going to miss out on what's great NOW!

What do you need with an Xserve? People in that market just buy when needed, if you're waiting for an update you're probably not in the intended market.

I need a server for a new network being built at my business. This system will be replacing the current system.

I don't intend on waiting to purchase but I still have a little time.

My budget was just approved and If I can get a dual 1 gig for the price of the current, I don't have a problem waiting a week or so.

It's going to take that long to get the wiring installed anyway.

    Thanks for your input

I'd say just buy it now. Probly compared to your old server, this one will kick butt.

What kind of business? You should be really sure you need an Xserve because you might be able to do everything you need with a DP867 and save yourself a ton of cash.

A 100 to 200 MHz bump on a server really isn't going to make that big of a difference. Get one now.

We just got a new XServe and its sitting accross the room from me now. The real question is, when will I have the time to set it up and take it down to our data center?

If Apple only made their computers with with more of these, they'd soon get that 95%

And some big numeric displays on the front to show the clockspeed.

Yes Apple makes the darn computers so complicated, what with the eject and volume keys on the keyboard, you know where your HANDS ARE instead of on the front panel of the CPU sitting under the desk behind a door.

And why on earth would anyone turn on the computer by pushing a corner of the display, I mean I spend all my time working with a computer by starting at its front panel and not the display. The display ISN'T the computer! Apple is so dumb.

Just pointing out the absurd by being absurd. Relax.

Oh if you want something on the front of your computer showing what its doing get one of these <a href="http://www.exittoshell.com/products/macstat/"; target="_blank">things (before they are gone). A four line version would be nice...

Hm, isn't October 15th some magic day? Well if there was an Xserve announced in a week or two, it wouldn't ship for months, so get the current one now.
