Should be able to do do RW. Why is Apple still making crippleware? They don't let PBG4 superdrives do DVDRW or 2x DVDR or 16 CDR, they are half that speed with no RW, unless you get a firmware patch. WTF mate? And a G5 update has to be coming soon if it's bested by the lowest end machine they make!

Man, I am drooling over this. My kids have a 400MHz G3 iMac. Good machine, but son #1 is starting to play "real" games and the G3 won't cut it. This iMac cost us $850 or so three years ago. For $750 we can replace it with something MUCH better, even by date comparison.
Now, if I only had $750. I know what you are thinking, but nope. Did my taxes Feb. 1, and that money has already been applied to other streams. Dang.
I think this is a very VERY solid update, important for us academic types (all the spending for fall semester is being planned or done now, before June 30), and should at least stop the bleeding in higher ed.
Actually, that wasn't a reference to me ("nothing to complain about here, folks"). It was directed at YOU PEOPLE.
The usual post-announcement "Bitch & Moan Brigade" who always posts their bawling, gloom-and-doom bullcrap here within 2 minutes of any and all Apple product announcements, saying how "Apple SUCKS!" or whatever.
I was talking to THEM, not making a personal comment towards me. I'm not really one to complain about hardware, as I'm a reasonable, well-adjusted, easy-to-please kinda guy, devoid of any Spec Whore tendencies and fairly grounded in reality.
updates, 'bout 2 weeks at most & interestingly (to me) Powerbooks especially.
now you know.

At 799, they should finally have something schools will buy.
For 1049 and 1299 Canadian, they're still short on standard HDD size. The 8X DVD unit tops the competition at 1299 Canadian, but the 17" NON-Trinitron CRT is a definite loser. For 1299 Canadian, considering that I'm not getting much standard RAM or HDD, a 17" LCD really is the standard for a machine of this price.
Also, considering the fact that you're stuck with it, a CRT at this point in the game is more than a little retro tech.
Let's see the edu prices before we comment on the suitability of this model.
If they're going to schools for 699, or better yet 599-649, and 849-899 for a Superdrive edition, this may just the type of model to get some attention from principals and trustees.

Here's what's currently being offered to schools. No word yet on bulk discounts like the 30-eMac discount we had previously.
US$599.00
1GHz PowerPC G4
256MB DDR333 SDRAM
40GB Ultra ATA drive
US$649.00
1GHz PowerPC G4
256MB DDR333 SDRAM
40GB Ultra ATA drive
CD-ROM drive
US$749.00
1.25GHz PowerPC G4
256MB DDR333 SDRAM
40GB Ultra ATA drive
Combo drive
56K internal modem
US$899.00
1.25GHz PowerPC G4
256MB DDR333 SDRAM
80GB Ultra ATA drive
SuperDrive
56K internal modem
All models include an Apple Keyboard and Apple Mouse.
That was my second thought. My first thought was: If only I could buy a new eMac without the CRT! I already have a nice 17" LCD on my desk. I would be perfectly happy to pay the same prices for an eMac without the CRT. That would be the long-wanted headless iMac.
Maybe I missed it, but I didn't find any information on L2 cache for the eMac's G4. Does anyone know what chip this is? I'm suspecting these may be the same chip used in the current PowerMac G4.

I may very well dump my 15" iMac for one of these new eMacs. Sure it's heavier, but it truly is an AIO in that I don't have to carry those globe speakers that came with my iMac.
Couple of questions...do these eMac have a fan and if so, are they quiet? I'm hoping the power supply is not buzzy either.
Which encourages me to think, the iMac should be updated Real Soon Now. From a marketing standpoint at least (usually the deciding factor with Apple releases!), a revamped iMac looks to be next up, maybe even next Tuesday.
And if they're not doing just a feature bump, then maybe they are ready for the new form factor which is more cost-competitive.
Why did I think eMacs had an LCD? Didn't they at one time?
I think this is a very solid, smart update to eMacs, at just the right time. Hope to see some of these puppies down the hall in the Math lab soon.
I feel iMac updates are coming down soon also. Overlap in processing power between PB and iMacs are one thing, but in two machines aimed at so much market overlap is another.

Just kidding. I'm with you all the way on that asessment. I cringed when I read this thread, just waiting for the doom and gloom.
But then, I am still basking in the warmth of a dual g5 running calculations 24/7.

Stoh? I was referring to your post-count, not whom you are posting.
To stay on-topic, one may still buy an emac w/o optical drive ($600!) or w only a CDROM ($650).

the reason they're still selling G4 towers is that they're OS 9 bootable,
for those who can't or won't move to OS X yet.
none of the other current machines support OS 9 boot (all are Classic only)
including the new eMac

Speak in English.
You can get a 40GB eMac for not much more than a 40GB iPod! And it actually comes with a serviceable amount of RAM!
This is a sweet update. Way to attack the low end and institutional markets, Apple!
Now the 15" iMac looks really silly...
