When we get news like this, it really narrows down the speculation. Second half of 2003 likely means the 90 nanometer process will be used for the first chips to ship in the Mac. Most samples before then, which Apple uses for development and test, are likely 130 nanometer chips. So it is good news, but pretty much rules out an early appearance of the G5 Mac. All this would have come out on October 15th anyway. I guess IBM does not mind giving out early information for general consumption. On the 15th we will learn the technical details. Makes sense. We don't have to be glued to the internet trying to glean details as they occur at the presentation.
Can someone fill me in on the meaning of that message:
TRANSMISSION EMBARGO UNTIL 12:01 am EDT/0401 GMT
The article comes through just fine. Or was this an embargo date and time that is already passed? I never noticed it until it was mentioned here.

Nothing to see here... move along.
Article dated 10/13/02. To be published online after 12:01 eastern daylight time. 12:01 AM EDT = 4:01 AM GMT. Nothing about April Fool's Day.
However, if you expect this chip in SF, you just might be a fool...
Okay, maybe I'm a little slow to understand. Did part of the article get left out, to be added later? Or was this on the article to alert people not to send it out, but it got sent out anyway, before intended? Or was this an embargo that has expired, and someone didn't remove the comment from the article? I've never seen anything like this before and am wondering what is going on.
Edit: After yet another look, maybe I found the answer. The article states that Monday IBM announced the chip. So this article should not have been sent out until 0401 GMT for a Monday release. Somebody goofed and did not see the embargo notice and gave it to us now.
Regatta is not the name of the chip, it's the name of IBM's top line p-Series servers, powered by 1-1.3 GHz Power4 processors. The new chip is supposedly called PowerPC 970.

Are you saying that the 0.07µ parts are used for the contacts??
Apple might as well admit they are coming out with Power Macs equipped with the new IBM proccessor. Even if it takes one year to come out. No is going to be buying Power Macs until this chip is released, unless there is a price drop. Even then, you might as well wait.
Gate confirms Apple as purchaser of PPC970.

Not to pick nits, but that's an Associated Press article, not the SF Gate. They just re-printed it.
It is curious that the AP is getting in on our "game" though. They don't usually do too much rumor mongering. I, for one, consider the AP to be the American Reuters - fairly responsible and (usually) correct.

Ah, Regatta...a much, much better name than gp-ul, gpul or GPUL.

Well someone's gotta say it, so I might as well do it. Regatta is the name of the line of servers which use the Power4, not the name of this new chip.

Uh, isn't GMT something like Greenwich Mean Time (Sp. most likely, but hope you know what I mean).
"12:01 am EDT/0401 GMT" from the article.
EDT = Eastern Daylight Time

IBM's press release for the PPC 970 just says it will be available next year. So where is everyone getting 2H next year?
So yeah, I'll take a chance on looking foolish.

At least they have the proper person quoted - Chekib Akrout - who is in charge of the PowerPC chips sold to Apple.
