Motorola - maybe not dead just yet...

did a bit of snooping around mot's site and came across some interesting info... they've said the g4 ain't dead yet and I think we may be in for a nice little treat come mwny.. yea, I know, they've stopped updating pmacs at the big shows, so why not surprise everybody with a nice juicy 5 month update to kick off the new year... here's what I put together...

g4+ (apollo), current chips.. max at 1.25 of course...

moving to .13 HiP7-SOI with next revision... roadmap showed early 2002.. so figure a year late as Mot's been known to do....

current 1 and 1.25 ghz chips at .13 should be 1.4 and 1.7 ghz respectively.. dual them out and they'll really fly...

add

512k L2 cache

2mb or 4mb L3 cache

will still be <10 watts (as they are "embedded" processors)

same altivec

RapidIO

Full DDR

surely they'll bump the bus... not sure how much though...

also mentioned that over the next five years, should see 3+ ghz, only RapidIO, possible multicore, low power (<10 watts always), book e architecture...

will try to find the link for the article again and post it up.. even if this system came out the latest march, I believe it would scream.. IBM may still be some time away for the currently non-existant "gp-ul" (I know, we'll see on monday), so I don't think that people should be waiting with baited breath for that...

all in all, would be a nice bump and I think very realistic....

mavster

btw... this was from a very recent roadmap.. so I doubt that mosr Hitachi rumor is in any ways true...

Why waste perfectly good bullets? Even kicking we should be able to drag her over to the glue vat without too much trouble.

Ummm I'm not sure I follow...

You say 'currently non-existant' GPUL right after you listed an imaginary uber-G4? At least we have something on paper in IBM's own official words that a new CPU will be introduced on Tuesday (not Monday) yea they don't come out and say it's for Apple but the do admit to it being a PPC CPU.

Don't get me wrong I really do like what you are serving up (for a short term stop-gap) but other than your words I'd like to have something a bit more substantial.

The part I don't like is this:

"also mentioned that over the next five years, should see 3+ ghz, only RapidIO, possible multicore, low power (&lt;10 watts always), book e architecture..."

Five years to hit 3Ghz? If this is official then it's a good thing we have IBM's GPUL 'soon' cause otherwise we'd be in a heap-o-trouble.

If you can provide the proof I'd love to see it...

found the link for the pdf.. check it out..

it's just about all in there aside from a couple of educated guesses I included such as time of delivery..

Looks like there will be a 0.13-micron G4 with 512K L2 cache. Should hold down the fort until GPUL.

Whop de do. Better process, 512k cache.

Not any more than most people expected, but then again people didn't expect much.

But Moto seems to have next-gen high-end embedded chips in the works. I will now procede to admit I was wrong.

3+GHz, less than 10W, Multi-Core, AltiVec, Rapid-I/O (on ALL chips).

In the next breath Moto is "committed to the G4 architecture".

    A 3GHz multi-core G4 with Rapid-I/O. kewl.

    Book E is G5.

G5 is dead for desktops. G5 is now embedded-only.

    mavster,

    Thanks for the linkage...

It sure looks like we have a MOT update in the not too distant future but one thing I saw was very strange..

In that PDF it states that the G4+ (aka MPC7451 MPC7455) is/has RapidIO but I'm pretty sure the ones Apple is using are still MaxBux. Unless RapidIO is being used 'on chip' or hmm maybe even 'on CPU card' (memory access to the L3 cache is much better / faster / more bandwidth / whatever) then it is to the rest of the Apple Motherboard.

Could it be that Apple screwed up and isn't taking full advantage of something the latest MOT G4+ chips have to offer?

If that's true then some of my anti-MOT venom has to get re-directed in future posts. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

I find it ireressting that Motorola puts RapidIO in the same context as 744x/745x.. but they don't say anything about adding that kind of support to the chips themselves.. just chipset supported RIO? G4's will support 60x/MPX indefinately it seems.

And.. HiPerMOS 7 i 2002.. It's 3 months left and I've yet to see any G4 chip (any at all?) manufactured in HiPerMOS 7. HiPerMOS 8 in 2003.. by how many years are they going to miss that target by?

"Typical Power consumption: less than 8 Watts at 1 GHz". Yeah.. I guess tha't why we need heat sinks the size of shoe box.

They are comitted to take the technology past 3 GHz in 5 years. Wohoo.. not impressed.

Motorola have already killed the development for desktop processors. Since this spring there's no mention of deskop processors, just embedded. The 7xxx-series was relabled to embedded processor.

    *sigh*

I actually think this is good news. (Hopefully they won't sell out or the new owners follow through.) This would be a great processor for the iMacs and iBooks. The new 970 is destined for the PowerMacs and probably the Powerbooks. I think this is the future of the consumer end for the next couple of years and I don't think it is all that bad.

I know we should want them to stick around so that IBM has someone to compete with, but really...I'd like them bought up, stripped down and beaten. I'd love it if we never had to speak of them again.

Do you remember those bets by Suckfuldotcom (Now YAR, or whatever)? Wasn't Book e the designation agreed upon to determine if the upcoming processor was just a spiffed G4+ or a G5?

Anyway, I imagine that a spiffed G4 is the most we'll see from Motorola for quite some time. No G5 predictions from my end of the table.

This entire thread just seeths of this. . . . . It was only time before someone said: I FEEL HAPPY! I FEEL HAPPY!

    ----------------------------

CART DRIVER: Bring out your dead! Bring out your dead!

    LARGE MAN: Here's one!

    CART DRIVER: Ninepence.

    BODY: I'm not dead!

    CART DRIVER: What?

LARGE MAN: Nothing ... Here's your ninepence.

    BODY: I'm not dead!

CART DRIVER: 'Ere. He says he's not dead.

    LARGE MAN: Yes he is.

    BODY: I'm not!

    CART DRIVER: He isn't.

LARGE MAN: Well, he will be soon. He's very ill.

    BODY: I'm getting better!

LARGE MAN: No you're not. You'll be stone dead in a moment.

CART DRIVER: I can't take him like that. It's against regulations.

BODY: I don't want to go on the cart.

LARGE MAN: Oh, don't be such a baby.

CART DRIVER: I can't take him.

    BODY: I feel fine.

LARGE MAN: Well, do us a favour.

    CART DRIVER: I can't.

LARGE MAN: Well, can you hang around a couple of minutes? He won't be long.

CART DRIVER: No, I've gotta go to the the Robinson's. They've lost nine today.

LARGE MAN: Well, when's your next round?

    CART DRIVER: Thursday.

BODY: I think I'll go for a walk.

LARGE MAN: You're not fooling anyone, you know....Look, isn't there something you can do?

BODY (singing unrecognisably): I feel happy ... I feel happy ...

If ST buys Motorola's semiconductor division (including PowerPC) then there might actually be some improvements. Certainly it can't be any worse than staying under Motorola ownership! ST may have enough strength and backbone to want to compete with Intel in the desktop processor market.

Agreed. I think they would even be better off if *I* bought them and tried to run the fvcking company.
