no sound on new imac

I am new to this so there must be a secret. The cable is plugged in securely to the port. Is there a volume control somewhere that I am missing

    try turning up the volume on the volume control on the keyboard

    That did not work, I could hear the speaker clicking. I am trying to hear a sound in iTunes and the volume in iTunes is also up

    I found the problem. Mute was on in iTunes
