The Democracy Mall store opens tomorrow. The drive time between each of the Apple stores is about 10 minutes during non rush hours. I believe that apple should be expanding to some other big cities before they open a 3rd in a market.

You are right, it is Montgumery Mall @ Democracy Blvd. http://www.apple.com/retail/montgomerymall/ I live a bit up I-270 and have attended both of the other openings. I got to the Tysons opening at the scheduled time and the line was out of the mall. By the time I got in all the tee shirts were gone. I hate the Clarendon store because I don't like paying for parking. Still that is 3 stores on the southwest / west side of DC. I travel to RI several times a year and would like to see one in Providence RI.

Well, you shouldn't be worried about lines for 3 reasons. One Tysons is alot bigger. Two montgomery is small. Three people in the Potomac area genrally hate apple and macs.

duders, I am here right now. It is SMALLER than Tysons, cozy, but everything is here. And they have some iPodmini's here for sale, but they will probably be gone soon.

It may be smaller but, it is better. I just got back from it, most of the people left with powerbooks and ibooks. There was a huge line for check out. They were already sold out of iskin( darn I wanted it).

I just got home from the store opening. The line was not as bad as I thought that it would be. It did go down to Hechts and start back the other way. I am a little disappointed in the tee shirts. I like the Grand Opening with the date on it. This was just the Montgomery Mall Apple store shirt, maybe I wasn't one of the first 1000. Well it is smaller and no theater but still nice. I guess I have been spoiled by Tysons. I have to say that I was impressed that the register line was half way thru the store the whole time I was there and they seemed to be moving people thru pretty quickly. I'll go back during lunch during the week to sign up for the sweepstakes.

I was one of the first people in the store. I got the same t-shirt as you. So, you were the first 1000 people.

Went there today. Nice store. The same size, maybe a tad smaller, as the Clarendon store. Nice location within the mall: right outside of Hechts on the second floor. This third store will really put a squeeze on the Montgomery county Apple specialists like MBS.

True that. Rt. 66 is always jammed up. It's sad, really.

It definitely does feel smaller. How can they have presentations with no theater?

    The staff there was nice.

Well, there's those cool bigscreens at the Genius Bar... I'm guessing that Apple is getting some great operating margins with the non-theater stores (generally known as narrow stores, due to their 30 foot width and mall frontage). The extra sq. ft. and especially mall frontage of the theater stores (generally known as wide stores, 45 feet and up ) are undoubtedly much more expensive, without generating significantly higher revenue. In fact, I bet the revenue per sq. ft. is significantly lower. It seems that they are going with the 30 ft. stores more and more often for the new openings, and complementing those in the very high traffic areas with the flagship stores.

Yes, I would say that Apple hires and trains quite well.

The only problem I see wih the smaller "footprint" of the store is the software selection placement.

I noticed that the software was sort of hidden all the way in the back o of the store; I actually had to look for it. The Tysons store is layed out very nicely. All the software is clearly visible and the titles are easier to browse.

All-in-all however, I think the smaller format is better for Apple. Much of that extra square footage at Tysons is a waste.

Hmm, well at least another Apple store is close to me. Spiffy. I was gonna try and make it down, but I was too tired from the AP Euro test. Damn French

We need one of these rumored mini Apple stores in the University Park, main Penn State Campus area. It'd be awesome for 45,000 students to have access to Apple directly.

That was a good read about the retail stores. I hope the new store doesn't pull too much business away from MBS. I've known Sonny since 91 and that was where we went for all Apple releases (iMac, OSX and about any big release). Always a good party and turn-out. I wonder what size campus / schools they will be targeted for the mini-stores? Taking out the kids section and reducing some of the accessories and 3rd party hardware and software will still require a good size store. They should still have good displays and a genius bar. Sales would be feast or famine. During the buying season they won't have enough in stock and in the middle of a semester the kids won't be buying much. Retail - it's a tough game.

    AP EURO!?

    ewwwww

I still have Governant and Environmental Science to get done with, although I am not studying for them and not putting any effort into them. I just don't....care.

I care more about Apple Stores than AP Scores.

Hey, Reg, how do you know Sonny? I actually used to work for MBS for about a year.
