Anyone know if the new Pioneer drive will be supported by iDVD out of the box, or do we have to wait for a software update?

Only Apple knows for sure and they aren't telling because they don't want anyone to know the DVR-105 exists as long as they continue to ship Macs with DVR-104's inside. My HUNCH is that it will work out of the box because the ROM is likely to be so similar to the 104 ROM that iDVD will probably think it's a 104. But I don't know because it still isn't for sale for 10 more days.

It's going to be a crap shoot to begin with. But Apple will have to support it sooner than later because thousands of existing PowerMacs will be getting one for Christmas. IMHO.

Apple does something to the drives they use. it would only work if apple decides to use it. I think it is to stop piracy of iDVD

Hmmm. You're right that Apple does something to the drives, and iDVD, as the software only works with the OEM drives.

I would suspect, tho', that it's not to stop the piracy of software that's available as a free download. It would either be a push to sell new machines, or (more likely, IMO) a push to sell more copies of DVD Studio Pro, which works on all burners.

Oops. Almost forgot to mention it. That likely means that the DVR-105 will not work with iDVD if purchased as an after-market item. You'll have to buy DVD SP to make it work.

OWC was selling the DVR-104 as a firewire external with an enabler to make it work with iDVD. They are no longer allowed to supply the enabler, at the request of Apple legal.......

iDVD is not a free download. It costs apple money to ship (Mpeg encoding license).

But it probably is a push to ship more copies of DVD studio pro.

This is not a scheme by Apple to squeeze money out of its users. This is, in fact, another case of "Blame MPEG-LA!"

Apple pays an MPEG-2 encoder license for every SuperDrive shipped by the company. Apple can't allow iDVD to work with any DVD-R/RW, because that would violate the licence agreement.

Apple has publicly stated (back when they shut down the OWC "iDVD enabler" software) that they are trying to aquire a license based on copies of iDVD.

I would imagine that iDVD 3.0 will be part of Panther and will work with most DVD-R/RWs.

My apologies.....it appeared as if it was from Apple's site, and I've had no need for it, so.....I assumed.

    My bad. <img src="graemlins/embarrassed.gif" border="0" alt="[Embarrassed]" />

So DVD SP should work with the DVR-105 without any update?
