iMac update overlooked?

I think there was only one other machine in Apple's recent history that received so little and few (in this case none at all) upgrades for such a long time, and that very same product was met with the same ambiguous enthusiasm as the iMac II (great design, probably going to the MoMA, but customers aren't buying it): yeah, you guessed it...

So, how long 'til it gets discontinued (and SJ kicked outta there)?

Well, there is another scenario: the iMac II moves to middle/prosumer with the 17 and 19 inches displays, and the eMac becomes the "official" low-end/original iMac replacement. Given the myopia with which Apple management regarded the eMac somebody should still be kicked out of Cupertino.

Executives fail for lack of vision (pushing the iMac II), but the market dictates what it needs (eMac).

As if the whole Moto situation and global economic slowdown weren't enough...

Something that occurs to me all of a sudden is perhaps Apple was just waiting for the G4 to move to a 0.13 µm process to alleviate heat issues. Hey it's a long shot but it's the only one I have to explain this

Actually we're at Rev. B. The price bump was a revision.

For all of you G3 naysayers, the iBook really limits it by its slow (100MHz) bus/RAM. The 750FX supports a 200MHz bus. The 750FX is really quite a decent, low-power processor. The rest of Apple's bus/memory tech just needs to catch up.

You guys are so smart and SJ, Jon Rubinstein, Phil Schiller, Avie Tevanian, Fred Anderson, and the rest of Apple are so dumb! Let's go to the next board meeting and present your ideas! I'm sure the board will vote you in and throw the current clowns out!

Well, anytime you want... I'm sure nobody on the board ever tried to do a reality check--hell, they all live on SJ's RDF, right?

All I know is that the LCD iMac (especially the 17" model) is our best selling product in our store. eMac is a close 2nd, and iBook in 3rd. Though there's been a lot more interest in the iBook of late...

No it wasn't. The hardware has not changed...therefore, it is still Rev. A. (The 17" is a late extension to the lineup)

But, i agree about the 750Fx. I'd love to see how it would do on a 133Mhz with good Gfx card...

hardware may not have changed but Apple DID change the model number by adding a B to the end... hence revision B

Vindication for arguments I've been making all along. You all know the eMac should have been with us nearly 2 years ago, but noo, why sell people the 17" flat display they've been asking for nearly since the iMac's first revision when you can wait on an LCD model you may or may not be able to make yoour ridiculous margins on? It's not like they wouldn't have sold, oh a few million eMacs if they'd appeared in early 2000. More important for Steve to slay the CRT, only to resurrect it months later, and miss how many sales in the process?

Resurrect? Apple didn't stop producing the CRT iMac when they introduced the TFT iMac!

You know what I mean. More important to hold onto the 15" CRT for far too long, pretend to slay the CRT, etc etc, comedy of errors, declining marketshare...

But Steve did say that the CRT was dead.

Survey ranks Apple board among worst

A new survey published in BusinessWeek's October 7th issue (and available to online subscribers) ranks Apple's board of directors among the industry's worst, along with The Gap, Xerox, Dillards Inc., Qwest Communications International Inc., Conseco Inc., Kmart Corp. and Tyson Foods Inc. Additionally, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has the dubious distinction of being on two of those boards -- Apple's and The Gap's -- noted Reuters.

Apple could be more competative than they currently are. It would seam by some of their moves, like buying Shake, that they are working on it. The fact remains though that the LCD iMac has not seen a processor upgrade since it was released, yet they clearly have a faster processor that they could put in it which would make it a more competative product in its intended market. Their LCD monitors are in the same boat, it has been a long time (a year or more?) since they were released. In that time LCD prices have plumited, you can pick up a 15" for under $300 and 17" for under $600, yet Apples prices are stagnate for this product (except for rebates along with the purchase of a new PowerMac/PowerBook). The iBook and PowerBook are due for a update based on typical timelines that Apple has used for revisions in the past.

Could I do a better job? I dont know, they have more inside info than I do. I dont know the cost of putting a faster processor in an iMac, and how long that they need to sell that model before it would be profitable to do so. I also dont know what will be released in January. Apple could be doing a "barn buster" of a show in January which will knock everyone socks off. All I do know is thatin my opinion Apple has not been agressive enough in updating their hardware, which is limiting their ability to effectively market their products.
