Motorola Appoints Michel Mayer as Chairman and CEO of Freescale Semiconductor

Quote:

Schaumburg, Ill., May 17, 2004 ? Motorola, Inc., (NYSE: MOT) today announced that Michel Mayer has been appointed chairman and chief executive officer of Freescale Semiconductor, a Motorola subsidiary that is expected to become a separate, publicly traded company later this year. Mayer?s appointment is effective immediately.

Mayer, an internationally recognized business leader, spent almost 20 years at IBM Corporation, most recently as general manager of IBM Microelectronics, which develops and markets customized semiconductor products and services.

Ed Zander, chairman and chief executive officer of Motorola, said, ?After an extensive, global search, we believe that Michel Mayer has a unique combination of operational experience, leadership skills, customer focus and technical expertise to make him the ideal choice to lead Freescale Semiconductor as an independent entity. Michel is widely known and highly regarded in the industry among customers and peers around the world, and his appointment reinforces Freescale?s global focus.

?With the planned separation, Motorola is creating two distinct companies with clearly defined business strategies and investment characteristics,? Zander said. ?Motorola will continue as a global leader in wireless, broadband and automotive communications technologies, while Freescale Semiconductor will be a global leader in semiconductors.?

Does anyone still think they're not dead serious?

I continue to remain cautiously optimistic about what Freescale will accomplish this year. They seem to be making all the right moves since Galvin was ejected (and to be fair, even before then).

This is, in the long run, a hint that they may well be serious enough. If they really plan to target anything outside the embedded market.
