First, I'm not like you and I'm looking forward to getting my PB ina few days. Secondly, if as rumored, it will be a 1-33-167nhz bump in 6 months, in the standard area for Apple bumps. Something a troll wouldn't be aware of.

Or will we be able to reliably clock the new iBook to 900?

Damn if this is true I don't see why you people are excited. This is PATHETIC. People here know there's more then Mhz but the unwashed masses sure as hell don't and if it's "mhz" not "ghz" they're not going to buy. DUH.

Does Apple have to even hire market geniuses to see this?</strong><hr></blockquote>

How can you tell if the proc is actually an 800 or an overclocked 700? (When if these are the true specs. cause we are all jumping the gun on these rumors) Is there a way to tell without actually buying one, like serial/part numbers? If so it might sway my decision on whether to buy one.

It's stupid to complain. It's going to be faster and cheaper than what is available now. Would you prefer they stayed with what is currently available?

Bringing the iBook to $999 is a great move on Apple's part. It makes their most popular computer (iBook) even more lucrative.

We still aren't sure what the video and RAM specs are, but hopefully there will be some improvement on that front as well. I'm almost be tempted to make a purchase, but I'm trying to drag my Pismo to the 3-year mark before replacing it, so I'll let it go at least one more revision before I buy mine.

Do PC laptops in the iBook's price range typically support dual displays (spanning, that is, not mirror) ?

Yes, PC laptops in that price range typically support it. When I bought my mid-ranged 600MHz iBook, equivalently priced PC laptops had 14" screens and could do monitor spanning. In the end, I chose the iBook because I liked the 12" screen (same 1024x768 res as the PC laptops) and I prefer running OSX. I didn't want to go through the hassle of installing FreeBSD or Linux on the PC laptop, then go through the hassle of getting a CISCO wireless card (needed at my school as we run LEAP) working.

I wish I could afford a new iBook. Question: How much do you figure I could sell as 600MHz, Rage128 (8M VRAM), CDRW/DVD, 20G HD for on eBay? I've never sold anything on eBay before but it would be tempting to sell my iBook and upgrade. Although holding off another year might be a good idea. I just bought this one last Jan so don't really NEED to upgrade it. I mostly want the better graphics card.

So it's true, though I'd like to see some specific examples. We know from the hack floating around the net, that Apple actually had to work to disable the spanning feature of the Radeon. I mean what the **** is that all about? The TiBook is nice, but it's just absurd what they charge for it. And regular XGA is restrictive, I don't care what anybody says. On a laptop screen, on the go, I can live with it, but when I sit at my desk, I want to be able to plug in something with higher resolutions and a bigger screen. I don't even care about dual displays, one big external display will do just fine. 1280 and up, right up to 1920x1200/1440.

This neutering of products to coral people into higher priced machines just has to stop. I'm not buying a PowerBook because an iBook doesn't have a feature I want, Mr Jobs, I'm buying another brand altogether, one that has both the price and feature set I need. You can go back to watching the slow erosion of Apple's market-share and the occasional round of "lets blame the economy for our complete lack of acceptable hardware."

I should think it better to at least have up-to-date consumer machines, rather than have out-dated Pro and consumer machines, 'cause, heaven forbid people should get a deal on a mac. Very well then, people will get deals elsewhere, which is exactly what's happening.

And before the "But iBooks sell very well, you're an idiot" comments start flooding in, I just want to mention that I'm speaking to a general state in Apple marketing philosophy. They may be doing Ok on this particular model, but the long term projection (over the last 2 decades) is another picture entirely. Apple is shrinking mac sales into insignificance. Especially troubling is the state of Edu. When that position of dominance is gone, 4-5 years down the line, killer products or not, lower prices or not, market penetration will shrink yet again.

    Fvcking Apple...

I think the entry level iBook is perfect as a traveling companion for someone with a desktop machine as a main machine. If the cut is 200 dollars and you don't get a cdrw I'd be more than happy.

Please Apple: 128 MB RAM is a joke - especially if it's soldered.

agreed....especially since at apple education i can upgrade the cd to dvd for 50 bucks, get the 50 bucks off for ed discount and still get my kids a laptop for a grand that will play cd's and movies and surf the web....they can use the desktop iMac to burn cds and dvds.....thinking the girls will be happy at the holidays at thegelding household....g

    Well, let's recap: You said,

"My girlfriend wants one ... I keep telling her to hold off for a G4 in it ...", and then I said, "So you told her not to get an iBook for at least another year? ". What is not to understand? <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> The iBook won't have a G4 for at least a year.</strong><hr></blockquote>

    Yeah, lets recap ...

I said I had been telling her that but if they do this upgrade then I will just tell her to buy one ...

Try reading complete sentences, your conclusion does not make sense because it is based on only part of what I said. In fact the reason that I would just tell her to buy one now and stop waiting [if they do this release] is because if they do this update and maintain G3s in the iBooks then it will be at least 6-9 months before they move to G4s. Read the whole thing before you respond.

I miss the days when things like monitor spanning and voltage-sensing power supplies were Macintosh standard features. I sort of understand some of the cost-cutting measures (110V/220V auto-sensing power supplies are a little more expensive), but since there's lots to differentiate the iBook from the PowerBook already, and (as far as I can tell) no added expense in enabling the Radeon Mobility's spanning support, I don't see the point in disabling it. I really don't.

I just don't see sales of TiBooks falling through the floor because iBooks can now span their desktop! Woo! Or maybe they're afraid it would cut into desktop sales?

Either way, it's not one of their better decisions if you ask me.

The power supplies are auto sensing.

Zdnet has the iBook update/rumor now. However they are posting that the price of the bottom line iBook will be 990 instead of 999. Only 9 bucks but just looks better. Maybe its a typo!

OK, this is really old, completely OT, and, quite frankly, I really don't care... BUT:

I read the entire post before my first response. There is a difference between the present and the future tense in the English language. I realize that many members here use English as a second language. If that is your situation, then all is forgiven and forgotten. If you speak English natively, then I am right, you are wrong, and that is the end of the story. If you insist on continuing to argue such a stupid point, then carefully re-read all of the posts up to this point, and make sure you notice the use of verb tense. Then reconsider your decision to post again.

    Now, on-topic:

Anyone think that sense c/net is reporting that retailers have the ability to order new iBooks, but not new Powerbooks means anything? No PB update? Not available immediately? C/net just asked the wrong people? Something else entirely?

We have heard a lot more about the iBooks than the PowerBooks these last few weeks. We don't have any PowerBook specs or prices. I don't think apple is going to sell many computers priced so high over christmas anyway. The slightly better and cheaper iBooks will go down well over christmas I think, heck I wouldn't mind having one.

\tI think apple should wait until the MPC7457 is out before upgrading the PowerBooks. For example at MWSF apple could release DDR powerbooks at 1.25Ghz. They could also come out with new towers 1ghz, 1.25ghz, and 1.5ghz all dual with 200mhz bus's. The only thing I would do to the Powerbooks right now is cut prices and add a better GPU. How about 667mhz for $1999 and 800mhz for $2699. Still to much if you ask me.

I really hope apple puts the 7500 in the iBook and the 9000 in the PowerBook. That would really help them sell. Apple should not make themselves look stupid with a lame PowerBook update. I really hope they just wait and do a real update later.

I think you may be right. Maybe just a price cut on the PB until MWSF... too bad, b/c I'm ready to buy a 1GHz w/ Radeon 9000 this week. I don't think I'll see it.

1st you do care otherwise you would have let it go without comment.

2nd this isn't that old, its at the top of this page.

3rd you are right, it is very off topic but you were the one that brought it up.

And 4th, in response to your little attack ? I said "I HAD been telling her ... THEN I WILL tell her" do notice the tense change.

Like I said, reading is cool.

Eh, probably a mix. It is fair to assume that they picked up the news from the rumor sites [which they basically admitted by citing Think Secret] and then contacted a couple of people at a Comp USA or something. Either they came up with nothing on the PowerBooks or there isn't anything. Since it would be rare for Apple to update both portable lines in one day at a special event they might be holding off on the PowerBook update until later.

Anyone know what will be the plan for Apple events in January since MacWorld and Apple are having such a falling out?

Seriously, you think everything is too much money. They just revamped the Power Macs big time over summer so it won't happen in January. It would be nice to see the PowerBooks stepped up like you described but its unlikely until the Power Macs are further ahead. Regarding the pricing ? OK so find me a couple PC laptops from the likes of Dell, Gateway, and HP/Compaq that have an equal feature set [minus the processor] and quote some prices ...
  • Reply 60 of 71
Actually, Bogie, your first post says, "I keep telling her..." wait till G4 etc; then "I will just tell her..." etc.

So, if you "keep telling her" to wait for a G4, then my reply is accurate in that you "told her".

Grammar is a beautiful thing. Now if only people could understand it.

Anyway... it's all good, as long as there are new laptops this week!
