New Open Source Browser: Shiira

Anyone else tried Shiira?

It's a WebKit-based, open source browser. I don't know if it is a serious contender or if it's just a demonstration of how easy it is to write a basic browser in Cocoa with WebKit.

If anyone who reads Japanese can shed some more light on the matter then that would be cool.

(Talking of alternative browsers Bumpercar looks very cool for those of you with kids.)

    Very nice find

The tab bar is great, draggable and all.

I like it. Hopefully PithHelmet or similar will work with it soon ... or I'll have to install AdBlocker here.

    Viva the browser wars!

Yeah! Thus far, thats the only thing I miss about Safari+Pith. Ad blocking! I'll try contacting the maker of Pith and see what happens.

Yea, it uses the cookies of Safari by default - I noticed that only after browsing in AI, and not as me. It would be neat if it could have an option to have its own cookies too.

Since it's open source, you're much more likely to find that feature built in.

I think the icons need a little work but it is a pretty nice browser.

I like the draggable tabs! That is something I have been wanting in Safari since they put tabs in there.

Did you notice that in the nightly builds there is a system to change the icons to different sets? They had a competition to design different ones.

yes, the next release should support anything using webkit, more or less. the developers might have to write a tiny plugin (or i can hack them just like i did with Safari).

Not a clue. Check out his site for a blog he keeps on development. I'd direct link it but his site is notorious for being down.

Call me crazy, but the links bring up a page from yahoo that say it' can't be found, I'd really love it, can someone give a new link, or host it for me temporarily?

    Much thanks!

    ::edit::

Ok, I see that it's a flakey site, missed the posts that said that, what I get for carooosing through the topic, instead of delving into it all..
