Yep. The multiplier is now 16x, but that's pretty recent.....it used to be 9x, so that's probably what he's thinking of.

Anybody know if the G3's multiplier has gone beyond the 10x it was?

MacWorld is only 2 months away (its starts Jan 7th).

I really don't see Apple updating the iMacs within 8 weeks. They're going to miss the xmas shopping season anyway, so why not wait till January?

Real DDR isnt on Moto's roadmap untill 03 if I recall.

A pre-January release of the iMac could be benefitial to Apple becouse it means that they dont have to sell it as a OS X boot only computer in January, and consumers can still have the choice of booting in OS 9.2. $999 for a 17" iMac seems a little optamistic in price to me though, and I wouldnt bet on the update.

Post Jan 1 will bring some type of update to the PowerMac becouse Apple wants the pro markets to embrace OS X, and they have been slow to do it due to lack of key programs. If Quark is ready with their OS X version for the expo, then I would bet on a new PowerMac at the expo, if not then they will wait till later in the month, or as late as February.

I am suprised that Apple hasnt released another digital lifestyle device this year. It would appear to me that Oct/Nov is the best time to release one. Not releasing one keeps the focus on lack of speed increases to the iMac and PowerMac, and doesnt help Apple sell the digital hub idea.

Monitors are a logical prediction for SF. I would like to see them priced at $599, $999, $2299.

are there any computers with a monitor and a superdrive for under 1200 bucks???

and if they came up with a iMac 17" for $999 i might get that for my daughters for christmas instead of an iBook....that would be a very hard deal to pass on, but i can't see that price point any time soon (G4 and 17" LCD for a grand??? this couldn't be apple we are talking about is it??) .......g

I'm thinking the iMac will get another big rollout at MWSF. Why? Because the line has been almost completely stagnant. That's usually a sign that Apple is hard at work on a significant redesign. The problem is that hardly anyone's buying the 15", but a lot of people are forking out for the 17". So the obvious question at Apple is, how many iMacs could we sell if the whole line was at 17"?

The iMac is usually within spitting distance of the PowerBook, more or less, so I expect all 17" - and maybe 19" at the high end, since the sales numbers indicate that people are willing to spend $1800-$1900 on an iMac - 867Mhz and 1GHz speeds, and a bumped nVIDIA video chipset. The design will be refined (and replumbed internally) but not significantly different. Base price will be $1299. Since the iBook is leading prices down, there will be an iMac and/or an eMac with the old 800MHz processor and a CD-ROM drive at a more aggressive, sub-$1K starting price. MWSF will otherwise be about OS X, Apple's vision and direction, AppleWorks 7... oh, and maybe they'll introduce a new gadget.

PowerMacs are going to be more of the same, since the 7457 is a straightforward evolution of the 7455 and the line just got a (very nice) new case. They'll get a "stealth update" like they did last winter. I wouldn't be surprised to see the whole line clear 1GHz, all duals, going up to or past 1.5GHz, with a 167MHz bus at the low end and a 200MHz bus on the top two models, dual HDDs set up for RAID by default, FireWire 2 and USB 2 and Bluetooth. Same price points. No 970 yet. I'm an optimist, but I'm not that much of an optimist.

This is logical for two reasons :

    - he need to do it if he does want to sell some new i macs fore Xmas.

    - he is able to do it : both the i book and ti book have been updated.

    I will expect this :

    - basic : 867 mhz G4 with geforce 4 MX 32 MB , 40 GB HD 128 MB ram and 15 inch LCD screen for 1500 $ with CD writer

    - medium : 867 mhz G4, 1 MB L3 cache, geforce 4 MX 64 MB, 60 GB HD, 256 MB ram, combo drive and 17 inch LCD screen for 1900 $

    - high : 1 Ghz G4 , with 1 MB L3 cache, geforce 4 MX 64 MB, 80 GB HD, superdrive and 17 inch LCD screen with 512 MB ram for 2300 $

And in a similar but simultaneously we will see this update of the E mac :

    867 mhz G4 , geforce 4 MX 32 MB,40 GB HD, 128 MB Ram, CD writer for 1200 $ .

And the superdrive Emac with 256 MB Ram and a Superdrive for 1500 $.

All this macs will have a 133 mhz mobo. No G4 chips will be clocked under 866 mhz (the 7455 start at this frequencie). The old G3 i mac line will be discontinued.

Well then "confirmed": the new speed-hole case is designed for the '57-RM and the speed holes are designed from the port holes on the Roadmaster (we used to put lights in the holes in my day)

Personnaly I preferred the '56 Buick with the split rear window (or was it '55), That and the olds were the street drag-race kings of their day.

...and now back to the show

People, this is just not going to happen. Hundred bucks says the retard management at CompUSA doesn't even have the new portables properly stocked, displayed and priced by Thanksgiving weekend. Even if new iMacs were announced via press release next week, there just isn't enough time to get them into stores. This whole "iMacs in time for Christmas" argument has no legs. It's already too late.

There's another reason to wait for MWSF: the one year anniversary of the flat panel iMac. Steve will put that big product shot graphic on the screen, and then go on an on about all the awards it's won and the impact it's had on the industry in the year since its release. He'll then add "But we want to make it even better, so today we're introducing a whole new line of iMacs". He can't do that if the stupid things have been stealth released six weeks earlier.

I know Apple is moving away from hardware announcements at Macworlds, but this is Steve's baby on its first birthday at the biggest show of the year in Apple's backyard. He's gonna want to talk about it.

Repeat after me: new portables and iPods for Christmas. New iMacs at MWSF.

One of the things I never understand is why Mac users are always demanding new cases. If it is a case (forgive the pun) of improving a flaw like in the PowerMacs I can understand it but the Powerbook really is a great form factor. I really don't know why people would want to change it.

for the same reason they went from the Psimo case to the TiBook case. Both are/were great designs but from time to time you want to do something new and maybe even better.

And the Ti has its weaknesses too as most of us know, so that adds just one more reason.

    cheers.

    monitors

15 - discontinued (incl 15imac at fire sale prices)

17WS minimum standard on imacs, minimum display

19WS new high end imac, new standalone lcd

    22 lcd - discontinued

23HD lcd price drop of at least $400

and the -big- surprise is the new high end lcd

30 inches of widescreen high definition visual joy

the new 30 inch screens won't be cheap ($7k), but they'll begin to infringe on the low end HDTV market and allow IMAX format editing for ultimate drool factor

begin shopping for larger desks now

imac updates at mwsf (two 17, one 19, all WS)

appleworks passes office (full doc compatibility)

    more apple handwriting/inkwell technology

superior disability access through voice recognition

if there's an iCam, not only will it be 16x9,

it'll come with special lens and tools to automatically generate QTVR panoramas for you

shake workstation based on 970 to be released after mwsf, maybe for siggraph or nab expo

    to catch the audio/video professionals

    new collaboration with sony... iBot

    any productivity doubled via robo-butler

well maybe not the last one, but it'd be nice...

or maybe steve could buy moller aircars and integrate the 970 into a flying workstation

i'd definitely buy an apple flying car

I'd like to point out that all of you are neglecting the Xserve and it's related hardware/software. It is currently the second oldest (eMac doesn't count, made consumer at MWNY, I think, so it's new to us.)

I am willing to bet that before November is out we will see the Xserve RAID release and an update to the Xserve (note the capitalization/spelling, people. Say it with me now, we can get Apple's product names right, we can get Apple's product names right.) My guess is that the configurations will be single 1GHz, dual 1GHz, and dual 1.25GHz, all with 167MHz busses.

I am also willing to bet that these are the first products which will make use of some form of IEEE 1394b, whatever name it shall take.

And don't forget, 200GB hard drives.

14x200=2800, or nearly three terrabytes in a 3u enclosure (Xserve RAID)...the Xserve will support nearly a terrabyte alone.

I agree regarding the XServe/RAID. I thought that Apple has already said that the XRAID (or whatever it's called) will be released before the end of the year (I'm sure I read that somewhere).

Regarding Firewire 2 (IEEE1394b) in the XServe, well it would make sence to introduce the new port in the server and then progressively introduce into the other lines, however, I would think that Apple would like to announce Firewire 2 with press present (ie MWSF). Hmm, what a dillema!

A far as my guess for MWSF, I agress that Applework 7 with be announced and revised LCD displays. Powermacs definately won't be updated as it's only be a little while since they where updated.

I've got a Apple Product time line on my web site if people are interested to see when Apple products where last updated.

If I had to hazard a guess I'd say Serial ATA would have a good chance of making the Xserve at this stage. The current set up Apple uses can't be as cheap as Serial ATA would be and the improved cabling couldn't hurt.

And am I the only person who expects somebody other than Apple to get up on stage and announce support for Apple or OS X?

Edit: I seriously doubt the Xserve will be updated at MWSF. I should mention that

I do agree with PowerPC that Rendevous will be discussed, Apple and other vendors.

Phillips might even show a stereo using rendezvous and playing songs from an iTunes playlist. Now that would be good!
