Heheh, I witnessed the exact same interaction about 2 years ago when Apple came to Carnegie Mellon. I'm not sure it was 'Apple's speech recognition guru', but we got the same response. The question was in regard to voice interfaces and video-conferencing, but the speakers slyly alluded to upcoming voice technologies.

Funny thing is, they fielded questions regarding IDEs in the same way. When asked about VB-esque dev tools, they said to stay tuned for something real soon in this area. Turns out they were only talking about the free/bundled OS X dev tools... Only? ... Maybe they were also only refering to video conferencing support in iChat? Mmmmm, zero-config video conferencing! That would be nice.

Just noticed that you're also from CMU. Were you refering to the same info session from almost two years ago? (7th floor of Wean was packed and we ate nearly 50 pizzas while drooling over their Cinema displays)

Probably some sort of breast pump with an Aqua interface.

what if you could use the iPod 2 as recorder and (i) phone?

i thought it would be cool to record longer phone-calls and perhaps it's not too much effort to implement handy-mandy-phone-technology into the iPod?

hmm, well if he is the speech recognition expert i'd like to see whta's he's been doing since OS 8.5 ... Mac speech recognition at OS level doesn't seem to have changed much since then. Unless you are disabled and NEED that functionality only a masochist would attempt to do much with a mic and speech recognition. In fact, that guys's lucky to have his job if he's just been twiddling his thumbs since then ....

Actually, it has greatly improved in OS X. They even have foreign language recognition in the labs.

Awww, come on! It wasn't that bad!

It would also be Apple's second rack-mount product.
