iPod not mounting using a firewire cable

A mate came into class today, he has always been using his USB iPod cable (as he uses a PC at home), but today he brought in his firewire cable to use. When plugged in, the iPod starts charging (so it is getting power thru the firewire cable), but it isn't mounting as a hard drive. We thought it was a cable issue so he borrowed another mates firewire cable, and still it would only charge and not mount.

Does anyone know if maybe the iPod defaults to USB if you use it first? Or maybe what the problem could be?

Les.

    iPod (NOT mini?)

latest firmware I'm assuming? (probably not since he uses a PC...)

what iTunes are you using on the mac?

is the iPod showing up in iTunes at all?

No, he is running at 2.1 (I have since told him to update)

    It is on a PC.

And there is no iTunes on the PC, but that shouldn't be a problem as I am working on a PC with no iTunes and it works fine... but I have had to install MacDrive as mine is Mac formatted.
