Banners Suck

Posted:
in Feedback edited January 2014
Back last year when I joined this forum, I don't remember the oversized banners at the top and bottom of the page ever being there. Were they?

Firstly, these ad banners suck; they're too big, (for example that stupid Puccini one which is 728 by 90 pixels). [list=1][*]I'm never going to click these crappy ads. They mean squat to me. [*]They make the pages load much slower. [*]These images are disruptive to the visual karma seen only on this BB, out of all the others I've seen. [*]The ads are completely irrelevant. [/list=1]

Why are they here? Is it for the survival of AI, (which doesn't seem to be the case, as the ads aren't profit-making type ads, usually)?

Most importantly, can they be removed? Their a nuisance, especially to dial-up users like myself.

Thank you for your time. m.

    They were already there. They pay for this forum's server and bandwidth. No free lunches in today's world.

    Your two most viable options are (1) get over the slow loading ads, and (2) install PithHelmet to filter ads. I've been sticking with (1), although I will look at (2) as soon as I have time to set it up right.

    Absolutely, M3D Jack. I had to hold myself back from posting the third option as well. But I figured the two above were close enough to the .COM party line. Dunno...

    Remember the days when Monish's obscenity filter would prevent us from even mentioning TS? Anyway, call me a creature of habit, I'm over the ads and I am sticking around here, for better or for worse.

    What was that? I couldn't hear you over Tina. If the banner ads are here to make money why don't we go all the way and just have porn banners? It's called a LANCE, hellooooo?

    I guess I spoke too soon drewprops. At this point I'm enjoying the complete ad-lessness of "TS's new board" very much.

    My new 12-inch PowerBook with 10.3 and the version of Safari that is compatible with PithHelmet will be here on Tuesday. You bet that PithHelmet will be one of my first downloads.

    I'm willing to bet that kasper is probably losing money on the ads...

    they are so large that the bandwidth costs of hosting them must be eating up any profits he sees...

    I bet he is SAVING money by people blocking them

    I had to post one more time to point out this little tidbit of goody-goodness on the front page:

    Code:

    <!-- FASTCLICK.COM POP-UNDER CODE v1.8 for appleinsider.com (12 hour) -->

    <script language="javascript" type="text/javascript"><!--

    var dc=document; var date_ob=new Date();

    dc.cookie='h2=o; path=/;';var bust=date_ob.getSeconds();

    if(dc.cookie.indexOf('e=llo') <= 0 && dc.cookie.indexOf('2=o') > 0){

    dc.write('<scr'+'ipt language="javascript" src="http://media.fastclick.net');

    dc.write('/w/pop.cgi?sid=9991&m=2&tp=2&v=1.8&c='+bust+'"></scr'+'ipt>');

    date_ob.setTime(date_ob.getTime()+43200000);

    dc.cookie='he=llo; path=/; expires='+ date_ob.toGMTString();} // -->

    </script>

    <!-- FASTCLICK.COM POP-UNDER CODE v1.8 for appleinsider.com -->

    Thankfully, I haven't seen any pop-up or pop-under ads since swtiching from Internet Explorer to Chimera/Camino and later to Safari some two years ago. Pop-up blocking is the single best invetion the Web has seen since its birth. It's one thing to tolerate inline ad banners. It's a completely different thing to tolerate pop-up and pop-under ads. The latter is just not possible.

    Be careful boys and girls, there's a new breed of banner ads that will toss up pop over/unders if you mouseover them...even if you're running a pop-up blocker browser!! It's entirely possible that they COULD appear here, especially since AI sometimes runs banner ads for PC-only software!
