new iMac woes

Been a PC user for 15 years and for some reason a few weeks ago it struck me to sell all the pc's in my house (mine, my girlfriends and a few older ones) and buy an iMac for my girlfriend and a Powerbook for me.
Stage 1 the iMac.
We just got a brand new 17" iMac. Got it home, pushed the ugly PC out of the way and plugged in the much prettier iMac and...clunk...clunk...clunk...???
Now based on my experience it sounded just like a dead hard disk. Tried booting the recovery cd 1 which worked fine up until the point of selecting a drive to install to. The recovery CD couldn't see any hard disks? I was pretty sure at this point the HD was dead. So annoyed I moved the iMac to the spare room and plugged the PC back in.
Once the iMac was in the spare room I though I'd give it one more go...guess what ? it worked fine???? and still works fine the morning after??
I'm not sure where to go from here? When the iMac wasn't working we tried turning it off and on quite a few times with no luck. We checked the cabling as well.
The problem is now I have not faith that the hard disk isn't going to fail again at any point.
Suggestions ?

If there is an Apple Store in your area I would take it in have them take a look at it. They should have some Hard Disk utilities to get a quick diagnosis. If there isn't one, try a local Mac Specialist usually in the Yellow Pages under Computer Apple and last but not least a CompUSA. I would start with which ever one you purchased from if you did not order over the internet.

Don't forget the hardware test diagnostic that ships with the iMac (on one of the accompanying CD's). I'm pretty sure that checks the hard disk.
You paid for your iMac and you're entitled to use it.
It's bad luck, you can't blame Apple for an HDD problem.
Be wary though. This is a tenative date hinted at by about three sentences on the apple website. It is quite likely that new iMac orders in september will take months to fill.
Thanks for the advice. I returned the iMac to store I purchashed it from (John Lewis in Bristol, I'm UK based) today and got a full refund.
Like a few of you said the new ones are on the way and it seems sensible to wait a few months and get one of those. The only concern is that my girlfriend is worried she won't like the look of it as much!
Unless we see a really cheap current model iMac it looks like its going to be a while until we switch.
My Powerbook is waiting on me selling my PC and old car. Anyone want to buy an M Reg Ford Fiesta in the gloucester area ?.
