i tunes sales tracker

I've been hacking about with the itunes sales counter from Apples current 100 million song promo.

I figured out how to access the raw counter data. I've written a simple HTML/Javascript page that counts down 5 mins then grabs the latest count and puts it in a list along with a date stamp.

Maybe you can build up a history and work out any trends they have?

or at least it saves you having to keep on reloading apple.com all the time..

iTunes Sales Tracker

Good luck..

I figured out that if you disable cookies, it doesn't show the numbers. Why?

Am I going to need to be the one to make this into a Konfabulator Widget?

Ok, so I'm trying to buy something from iTMS and it's all slow and screwed up. Then I look at the apple front page and see they are about to hit another free iPod.

People seem to be really gunning for them

same thing happened to me last night, I tried to buy a 39 track album, but I only got 3 tracks before I got an error, then by the time the error fixed 95 million was hit.

That would be cool, if a little short lived..

As for cookies I'm not using cookies but the htm pages do link to some of apples javascript, maybe that uses them?

I was just tracking it up until 95,300,000 mark so I can make a purchase around then... i think i got it in around the right place, but the sale was a bit slow... I wonder why..

    95,300,618 - Sat Jul 03 2004 01:08:35 GMT+0100

    95,304,069 - Sat Jul 03 2004 01:13:38 GMT+0100

It was pretty steady going up 2-3000 songs every 5 mins. When it passed the 95,300,000 mark it seemed to stick, then shoot up 4000 songs.. The counter update was probably delayed due to a sudden surge..or it was my code

I hope this doesn't break the "official rules", but it is a good idea. Hope it works for someone to win, (me).

With over 99 1/2 million sales listed as of Sunday afternoon, it looks like the 100 million mark will be made in time for the Quicktime broadcast of Apple's earnings report on Wednesday at 2 PM PDT.

Based on an average sale of 3000 songs every 5 minutes, I bet iTunes will reach the 100 million mark within the next 7 hours. So around 1 to 1:30 a.m. EDT.

Update A better estimate of the sale rate is 2600 songs every 5 minutes so the actual time will probably be around 3 a.m. EDT unless the buying picks up.

No new iPods yet. I believe they'll be introed at Paris Expo (as well as the HPod) particularly if they have major upgrades in hardrives - which I believe will happen, and a change to the touch wheel ala iPod mini. Also a surprise perhaps with a longer battery life or even user replaceable? That would be nice.

well, now that the 100,000,000 thing is behind us, or soon will be, who bets on new iPods announced at the press conferance where Steve makes hay about the number, not to mention the conferance call...bye bye imac talk there...

That would be too good to be true.

but really, when was the last time steve missed a free photo op for new apple goodies, and this would get far more attn from the media at large than a computer show half way 'round the world (Paris).

Apple has never introduced new products at their quarterly report meetings with analysts and I suspect they won't do so this time. The meeting is about sales past, present and future and what the targets are for the next quarter. That's all. It's a Wall Street thing you know.

P.S. The meetings are strictly via teleconference and no reporters are actually at the Apple location.

It looks like about 31,000 per hour. Which puts it at about 3AM EDT. Was hoping to put in an order near the end (take the crap shoot). That's 1AM my time. Perhaps a bit late for me.
